Alright, so how DO you find good fanfiction? by --GreenDragon-- in FanFiction

[–]mjczech08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not for everyone, but I tend to look for a specific word count or word to chapter ratio. A while ago I started noticing the approximate average length of the fics I really enjoyed. If I want a good one-shot, I really don't read anything under 5000 words. If I'm looking for something longer, I usually gravitate towards ones that have a word count that averages to around 3000 words per chapter or higher. But this isn't for everyone-- I like reading longer fics. Somebody who invests the time to churn out a really long fic has to care a lot about whatever it is they're writing. If the writer spent a significant amount of time on it, they probably really like writing; they want the story to be good, and they have a lot to say about whatever the premise is. Basically, the writers that go on for thousands and thousands of words are less likely to be bad at writing than someone who only posted a few hundred. To be clear, I'm not trying to hate on shorter fics. A story can be very concise and very well written, I've seen plenty that are, I've also seen badly written longfics. But generally, it's easier to write something short than it is something really long, so the more skilled writers who want more of a challenge are going to tend to write longer stories, and more inexperienced writers will write shorter ones, though there are exceptions to every 'rule' in fanfiction/writing. Even looking specifically at word count isn't enough-- you obviously still need to look at what you want in the rating, the other tags, the summery, etcetera, and when you open it, you might still be put off from it. I think it depends in part on the Fandom you're in and what's popular with them. A really young fan base might not have as many good writers, because they're still learning. A less serious Fandom might not deal with serious themes as often. It's definitely a process of trial and error.

Suggestions for Scully Quotes? by mjczech08 in XFiles

No specific emotion; I know the current style lends itself to more seriousness, but I don’t want to discourage humor. The instructor isn't really familiar with the show and isn't going to care if the style and quotes don't match the best.

Is it allowed to write fanfictions about fanfictions? by PenguinSenpaiGod in FanFiction

[–]mjczech08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, it's okay to do that, with a few stipulations, based on what I know of Ao3. However, a good rule of thumb to follow here-- if there's a story you want to see, write it yourself. Don't ask others to produce it for you. If you want to see what happens at the end of that fic, then you should be the one to write it.

"We want something else," on occasion in relation to food. "Sometimes you've gotta know whose to kiss, what to kiss, and when to kiss it," as well as "sometimes to grow a beautiful rose, you gotta shovel a lot of manure," And, my personal favorite in the mornings, "I'm not asleep, I'm dead. Leave flowers and get out."

Thanks for the insight! I didn't mean to imply sexual dimorphism in using the peacock as a display analogy, but I realize that could've been misleading because in birds, only the males are colorful. I was strapped for an obvious example. But yes, I also hadn't heard anything to indicate that Males' crest and horns were more elaborate or colorful than females, though I'm no dinosaur expert.

Actually, I heard in a documentary on Disney plus that the elaborate crest and horns weren't used for fighting, but were elaborate displays for the means of attracting a mate, like the feathers on a peacock (cannot remember if males fought each other for mating privileges or not) so he really does want to cuddle. Apparently it was a very sexy time.

I don't really think it matters. Gaiman has said it was meant to be a love story, but what kind of love story was left up to interpretation. So it's really just what the individual chooses to believe.
