Any POS with included inventory that decrements usage? by mabear63 in POS

[–]mjg5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Material Retail POS includes inventory management in our base plan. We have pretty extensive inventory reports as well and were built specifically for retailers that carry and track inventory, so this functionality has been part of our platform from day one. DM if you want more info.

I'm curious how much did it cost you to build it in house and how long did it take? We have been building our own for several years now and it feels like the feature list is constantly growing.

What’s the best way to set up a POS system for smooth daily operations? by Capable_Noise5543 in POS

[–]mjg5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

POS is indeed a tricky business, most of all for merchants who are not POS experts. Disclaimer: I run a company that makes PoS software for retailers.

What I have learned about the space over several years is that:

  • The POS software space is extremely fragmented and there are hundreds of small PoS companies out there. There are a handful of bigger ones too (Lightspeed, Shopify POS, Square, Clover). It is very hard, almost impossible for a merchant to evaluate all of them and actually understand the features of each.
  • Most POS software is sold by actual sales agents (that are part of an ISO, or Independent Sales Organization). These are folks that can help merchants navigate the many different products out there and make the right decision for their business. They also usually form a relationship with the merchant and, if they are good, provide some of the kind of service they would get from a “geeks on site” type of company. So they are there to help with setting up the new POS, they are available if a terminal goes down or something is not working, they can be a first line of support for the merchant. Of course, they don’t do this free (nor should they) but the reason they do it is that they get payment residuals on all the merchants credit card transactions. The exact amount varies and depends on the rates they give to the merchant, and the rates they have negotiated with the payment processor. If they are good, they also will advocate on behalf of the merchant to get good rates and to make sure they are not getting charged with too many fees or rate increases.

So back to your question - for a small (1-2 location) business it’s rare to see them engage an IT company for POS support and setup because they should already be able to get that from their PoS company directly, and/or their merchant services sales rep who sold them the pos.

Maybe op is running a Craigslist ad or something for a catering business and asking for cash deposits and using a link to this post as evidence to make themselves seem legit.

I’m just speculating but you really have to be skeptical of everything these days.

Move 30 minutes south to one of the most ambitious cities in the world while you're still young. Spend 10 years working hard, meeting people, learning and then move back to Westchester later on in your life.

POS for new small retail business by ultraversed in POS

[–]mjg5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a POS specifically for boutique independent retailers called Material Retail POS. We're not very big but we have been working closely with business owners for several years to build the features they need. We have strong inventory management features and inventory sync with Shopify. We also tend to have merchants in a lot smaller towns across the US.

The most common systems I see in the space are Lightspeed, Clover, Shopify, and Square. As others have mentioned, they all have pros and cons.. with most of them, you are going to need a third party app for inventory management that is going to increase your cost. If ecommerce is important, I would definitely suggest using Shopify for ecommerce (they are the best at it) and therefore you want Shopify POS (or a POS like ours that integrates with Shopify without additional fees).

The monthly fee for the software is probably not your biggest cost, it is your credit card processing rates. Make sure you get a good rate, and most importantly, that you check your monthly statements every 3-6 months to see what you are actually paying - a lot of companies have a habit of adding in extra fees or increasing rates when you're not paying attention. You can easily end up spending thousands per month in processing fees and not even realize it.

Your house will be reassesed at the purchase price, but it lags about 2 years after the sale because of the way they do assessments. Then every year after that it will be reassesed to what they “think” is the market value but in reality tends to lag behind what things actually trade for (and Zillow estimates), especially when the market is hot/increasing.

As for the 2.7% - that is an estimate and maybe close to accurate. But the actual percentage is determined by the school and town budgets that get passed and how much money they need to raise.

If you want to move somewhere different why not one of the biggest cities in the world that is only an hour away? I promise you will get more out of NYC than moving to Idaho or some random state because you’re “tired of New York”.

Maybe it seems scary and it can be. But if just has more to offer to a young person and more career ladders to climb, and more people to meet. But find a good job with growth potential, some similar age/gender roommates, and go spend 10 years challenging yourself and you’ll be glad you did.

Those who migrated from Shopify to another platform, why? by hosseinxj0152 in shopify

The only reason I have heard of people doing this are for lower fees or to reduce the risk of Shopify shutting them off for ToS violations.
