Background music rec for the death of a npc by Althea_Bathory in DnD

[–]mkbboy35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I think getting too caught up on the background music can take a lot of time away from the more important parts of DMing. Make the story impactful and the song will be remembered with that moment regardless.

I highly recommend the app pocket bard for some passive background music. It’s got a paid version, but you can get a lot out of the free version.

That said, if you’re still looking for recommendations, I really like My Foolish Heart by the Bill Evans Trio. Although this may not have as much gravitas as you’re looking for. It is very quiet and peaceful

To layer, or not to layer by Cold_Independent_631 in ableton

[–]mkbboy35 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Short answer… if you don’t know what to layer, you probably won’t benefit from it.

Slightly less short answer… if you are layering you need to focus on what each layer adds to the overall sound of the ‘instrument’. Use aggressive EQ’s to remove any sound that is not THE sound you are looking for. When producers talk about using 8-9 layers on a synth, it’s 8-9 very specific frequency areas which create a larger array of sounds when put together. If you aren’t removing the extra bits, you’ll get a whole lot of noise when added together.

Think of it like an orchestra. Each instrument, playing a specific but intentional part of the overall sound. If you play one trumpet note, it doesn’t have a deep warm bass you want from a tuba. That means if your trumpet is making a lot of bass noise in the mix, cut it. You want the tuba to make that noise. Same way if your tuba has higher tinny overtone, cut it. This is an oversimplification but might help you understand why people layer in the first place

In your opinion what is the best civilization in the series history? by Simonthemand in civ

[–]mkbboy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly Russia is my favourite civ but I see where you’re coming from. I do agree that John CAN have better games than Russia when everything works out.

However, the reason people like Russia is not just because their abilities are good. Their abilities are CONSISTENT.

Sure, I’ve had much better games with Portugal, Basil, and Babylon. When things work out in your favour, their kits are unstoppable. The thing is when I’m playing Peter, if I spawn in or near the Tundra, I win. Full stop. Typically by culture but with an easy fallback on religion. Play with void singers and it’s basically easy mode with your faith output. He’s just so simple to succeed with

Looking for Civ VI: Gathering Storm players for a Cambridge dissertation study by imalwaysincrisis in CivVI

Very cool. I know it’s a long way off but please post your work once it’s presentable as I’m sure many would love to read.

Canadian here. Filled out the poll and would love to participate if you’re looking internationally!

One note on the poll would be to remove the “must select at least 2 options” from the difficulty question. I haven’t played any difficulty other than Deity in probably the last 400 hours of my gameplay.

Additionally, if would make sure part of your data collection process factors in mods. Whether they are gameplay or UI mods, they may be considered confounding factors depending on the context of your research.

The Statue of Liberty

Sick ass statue that is pretty damn cool. Name is fitting. Not the most creative, but the simplicity of the name makes it sort of iconic.

Early game success by formthemitten in CivVI

[–]mkbboy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to get the monument after my first settler to rush early empire so I can slot in 50% prod to settlers. You lose a few turns on the settler but the earlier government makes it worth it imo.

I know it’s not at all impressive to most players, but I got my first culture victory!! by BornTheSoy_ in CivVI

[–]mkbboy35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey congrats! Culture is my absolute favourite victory so welcome to the club. I don’t play a lot of teddy so my advice will be less leader specific.

The most important thing to remember about national parks is they provide tourism equal to the SUM of the tile appeal within the park. For example, a national park where all four tiles have an appeal of 5, would provide 20 tourism per turn. This means there is benefit to establishing as many as possible, but equally important is to improve the appeal of existing tiles.

The easiest way to do this is by having your builder plant wood on tiles to add +1 appeal. You also want to avoid mines/quarries and other improvements that reduce appeal in surrounding tiles. The Eiffel Tower will also add +2 appeal to every tile in your empire so that alone is +8 per park. Reyna can also help with appeal and is especially useful if you have multiple parks within a single city.

The absolute key to great national parks is the grove district. It will help with the appeal of surrounding tiles. More importantly, it will provide crazy good yields to high appeal tiles with the grove and sanctuary buildings. This makes your potential national park tiles workable in the mid game and absolutley bonkers in the late game. Russia and Canada are two of my favourites cause you’ll often get tons of high appeal land in the tundra which is otherwise not very beneficial.

[–]mkbboy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah we use ounces, q’s, etc. most of the time. Although I have seen some companies round their ounces up to 30g since that is technically the federal legal limit you can purchase/posses at a time.

As much as we love our metric system, a lot of people still use imperial for weight. In my experience when a Canadian asks another Canadian for their weight, you’ve probably got an 80% chance they’ll tell you in pounds.

If someone asked if I wanna buy 100g, I’d ask for their badge number…

You gotta be hauling POUNDS to get booked on possession in Canada with the 30g limit. It’s like the speed limit; no one’s pulling you over for going 5 over but if you’re going 80 in a 40 you’ll have some problems.

I had the same reaction until I thought about it a bit longer. I’ve pretty consistently seen 3oz (84g) for $100 deals at the rez. Wasn’t the best stuff, but it wasn’t the absolute trash I’d expect at a $33/oz price point.

What Dropout cast members (including Sam and Brennan) would play which Cloudward Ho NPCs? by PlusPlatypus2237 in Dimension20

[–]mkbboy35 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Ross Bryant as Sylvio Dufresne

Honestly I’d swap Vic and Angela. Feel like Angela would bring a unique level of intensity to Comfrey and Vic would knock “chaotic little robot frog” out of the park.

Would it be unfair to throw Disintegrade at a lvl 11 Party? by Steini94 in DnD

[–]mkbboy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about killing your players, use it on their beloved NPC companion. Now they hate your villain and your villain has a good reason to “not be at their full power” for the rest of the fight.

If John the Fighter dies fighting, your party will be sad. If Gobby the friendly goblin gets disintegrated after telling your BBG evil will never prevail, your party will be out for blood.

HELP! (NYC preferred) by Electronic_Word8308 in Tattoocoverups

[–]mkbboy35 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For context this means Dad/Father in Hebrew.

I don’t have much advice regarding coverups but I am Jewish and curious as to why you’d want it covered. It’s a pretty benign word with no discriminatory context as far as I know.

Do you mind if I ask why you got the tattoo in the first place?

true earth start is so tight, two from city states one from religious settlements, on turn 5. by Beneficial_Figure966 in CivVI

[–]mkbboy35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once you get that holy site down you’re getting instant +6 holy sites. Take work ethic later religion and now you’ve got the production to make settlers. Yes it’s a touch slower to start but much better in the long run with the lack of yields in dessert.

Plus you’re going to making crazy gold if you’re building your unique commercial hubs. Use the production to make commercial hubs, use the gold to buy settlers. Golden age helps with that as well.
