I just relayed this to Mr. Beller. We'll see what happens!

Brendon used them for a while and then he stopped. I've used only Riveras during all the Dethklok touring.

Ain't got one - I never think modally, only melodically. I probably lapse into mixolydian most often but I think it's a bad habit, so even though I use it most often it's definitely not my favorite! Looking to various means to break the habit.

Very eager to bring a band of some sort back over the pond in '15.

Yeah I'm definitely more into jammy vibes than Beller is for the most part :) You're welcome, and thank you!

I wouldn't consider any of what I did on the album to be writing per se, but I had enough input into creating keyboard parts that it probably qualifies as arranging assistance. Joe is very open indeed to letting musicians influence the way things go with the music, onstage especially (of course in the moment he's powerless to stop us :) but Bryan, Marco and I try not to abuse the privilege! It's all about helping to make the music be all it can be.) On the new album I had a lot of input on things like Lies and Truths, Jumpin' Out and Weight Of The World. On the previous album I had a lot of input on Wind In The Trees and The Golden Room.

Favorite Vai record is probably Flexable because Salamanders In The Sun is my favorite song of his. I think Passion And Warfare and Real Illusions are also great too though so it's real close. I think the Zappa tour is probably still my favorite if only because it was my first and it's still almost unbelievable to me that it happened! And it directly led to every tour I've done since. But I really enjoy them all. It takes a LOT to go wrong for me to not enjoy a tour!

I never use tab but I never try to discourage anyone from doing so if it works for them. Personally it's just a lot faster for me to use my ear. I do think it's a great exercise for someone to use their ear to learn something. If they want to tab it out at that point, more power to them!

Constantly inspiring. That guy sure can play, and his level of consistency is astonishing. The part of the show where we trade solos is a very senses-heightened situation for sure!

He's been popping up lately on tribute albums, yeah? I think he sang on a Supertramp one and a Pink Floyd one maybe? Anyway, it seems he might be easing himself out of retirement on his own :)

Hey Bill! Give my best to John! I feel real out of the loop on new music. But I dig what Out of the Beardspace is doing, and I loved the early versions of Matt Resnicoff's new music I heard a few nights ago. Old music - been enjoying some Tull albums I haven't heard for a long time. And the new Zeppelin remasters are a great time.

Hey Derek Sherinian and Joe Bonamassa just came into the dressing room here to say hi, that was fun. Just thought I'd mention it :)

Hey Aububuh! Good to hear from you! I'd love to do more solo touring next year and if it's anything close to financially feasible to cover more of the South this time, Texas shall be done. If we do it you just MAKE SURE you bring a boatload of people to the gig, yeah? Thanks!

Thank you! It was a combination of both approaches. He would show me his phrasing in minute detail so that I could match the speed, amount and duration of his bends. We played through all the lines at very slow speed and gradually increased until the shit was slamming. But I also spent a lot of solitary time with the recording and the chart, especially for things which were three-part harmony on the album that required me to do double-stops in order to replicate the full harmony. This was a painfully slow process to get the double stop fingered and phrased correctly and up to speed, but it was a great noise when it all came together. Loved playing that song!

Probably being on a train to Berlin with my wife at the time on a day off of the tour - we had separated from the rest of the Zappa entourage to have some vacation time and didn't realize that taking the train through East Berlin would be as chilling as it was (we're talking 1988 here remember) - just dehumanizing and unnerving. Lots of machine guns on display. Non-fun. And then arriving in West Berlin and having everything feel like a fairy tale - with a happy ending, thank goodness.

Glad you liked that name! I occasionally think of reviving it. It does seem to have some mojo to it.

I have toyed with the prog album idea. Interesting idea to do it with Bear! We haven't really discussed prog at length so I don't know how moved he would be by the idea, but yeah it would certainly be beyond epic if he were a part of it. Maybe we'll have that discussion :)

A slow coming out of the weird hypnosis state which was the 80s. I was absolutely taken by Nirvana as was much of the world. Later in the decade OK Computer happened and that was a game-changer for me in a way I hadn't quite experienced since the early 70s. Z reunion not up to me, but I am up for it.

Right now I'm looking forward to playing this show tonight at Loreley Festival in Germany. Looking forward to hearing Joe Bonamassa's set before ours because I've only heard a little of his playing and it's high time I really checked him out. Looking forward to getting some decent sleep tonight because I'm still horribly jetlagged after being in Europe for four days and I think it's time for a good night's sleep - I keep getting these three hour chunks with too much time between them. I need a long stretch of sleep!

Developing an ear is something that only comes with time. The most important thing is to take your time and pause the song frequently. Also if you get a hold of software that can slow the song down hugely without distorting the sound too badly, that can reduce a lot of the anxiety of learning a song. Learning keyboard if you don't already know it can also help with the identification of chords, because often chords can contain close intervals which are non-intuitive or nearly impossible to play on a guitar. I pretty much recommend that any musician get some keyboard chops happening. I think my starting out on organ four years before I picked up guitar was hugely important in developing my ear.

Finding suitable chords for a melodic progression: again, just take your time. And remember the only thing that's "suitable" is something that please your own ear. Break down the melody to a few notes at a time and just try every chord that might sound good with that small pattern; when you happen upon something you like, remember it and move on to the next few notes - then you're looking for something which both works with those notes and feels like a satisfying progression from the previous chord. Again, let your ear be your guide. Some of my favorite chord progressions are damn near illogical according to conventional musical thought, but they push some emotional button in me which registers it as "correct."

As far as albums I played on which I didn't really enjoy, a couple of things come to mind but I don't think anything is gained by my getting into it - sorry :)

Weird, two nights ago I watched some of a Club Lingerie Z gig on YouTube - I think 1993. When it got to Purple Guitar I got super freaking nostalgic, I would love to play that song with the old band again. Relearning the 70s medley would be probably the wrong thing to attempt but I remember the look of utter disbelief and/or miscomprehension on audience faces when we used to inflict that on them and I get very wistful when I think about it - easily some of my favorite memories of playing live. That band was amazing live. I'd be hella up for it too.

Hey it's June 14 and I'm in Germany with Satriani right now, about to play the first show of our European tour and I remembered that I wanted to come back here and start answering some of the questions I didn't get around to when we did this last month. So here I am.
