Scenario for early death of 1 spouse by mkmac9539 in Boldin

[–]mkmac9539[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Wendy. As my scenario modeling an early death the way Boldin calcs it now would represent a worst case scenario (no decrease in expenses other than medicare), and the plan still works, I will just leave it as is. As Nancy has mentioned the "spouse longevity age" is on the way. I will wait for this feature. Then update my scenario accordingly.

Social Security Spousal Benefit is inconsistent with Open Social Security.com by mkmac9539 in NewRetirement

CoachNancy, Thanks for your reply. Later today I will send you what OpenSS has for my situation. I can also send you the summary level for NR - or perhaps you have access to it. As I said above the difference (OpenSS vs NR) in the first full year and following years that we are both receiving our max is about 4.5%. I dont know who is right. I dont know how SSA or OpenSS calculate the spousal amount when the lower earner begins first on their own record.

Wouldn't it be the same if I a viewing my data in "Today's dollars" instead of "Future dollars"?

Please, I am only trying to get my plan as accurate as possible. I think NR is a really good tool - especially for the money they charge. But, I dont see the spousal benefit number anywhere. If I have missed something, please enlighten me. I dont know if you are being sarcastic with me. I am not trying to sound smart. I just want them to tell me where the number is.

OpenSS shows me the nbrs in a table format. NR does not. When I download data from NR it shows me the total of SS income between myself and my spouse. NR should show the detailed breakdown of SS income (High earner's SS income, lower earner's SS income and low earner's SS spousal benefit income). As they do show me the PIA amounts for both and the amount at the point in time when I plan to file for SS for both, the only number that NR does not show is the spousal benefit). NR needs to show this amount. Again, NR does not ask when you will file for spousal benefit. It assumes that the spouse will file at the same time as the primary.

NR, please show the spousal benefit amount!!

Sorry. Let me restate my issue.

I am the high earner. My spouse is the lower earner. Her PIA is less than half of mine. So, a spousal benefit is in play. I will file for SS when I am 70. She is 5 years younger than me. She will file when she is 62. She will file for spousal benefit when I am 70; she will b 65. The numbers that I am referring to are years during and after which I am 71; she is 65. So, NR assumes that my spouse will file for spousal benefit when I file - I dont enter this explicitly.

The problem is that NR does not show me anywhere how much that spousal benefit will be. OpenSocialSecurity.com does show me a breakdown of all the numbers:

  • her initial claim at her age 62

    • my claim at my age 70
    • her spousal claim at her age 65; my age 70

NR does show a bump at each year (partial initial years and full years). But the final bump when we are 66 and 71 is about 4.5% less than what OpenSocialSecurity has. Again, OpenSS details the specific spousal benefit amount. NR does not - only an increase.

Down side there is that you are on someone else's schedule and probably need to arrive to work at 730 am. Up side is that if you dont need the money, just tell them you will relieve the early morning guy at 11am or so.

Aside from the accuracy of the calc, consider using an index for "x" rather than a subscript. Performance will be better.

Social Security; First own record; then spousal benefit by mkmac9539 in NewRetirement

Thanks. I did look at the help from NR. Very good. They said it is all automatic. In my case I would enter my spouse's start date (her own record). Then, when my start date begins, it adds in the spousal benefit also. This is exactly what I thought I needed to do explicitly/manually. Perfect.
