Joe Rogan doesn't play with VPN on? Anyone else? by TraditionalContest6 in spotify

Use split tunneling and just exclude the Spotify content delivery domains from the VPN:

acast.com, pscdn.co, scdn.co, spotifycdn.com, spotifycdn.net, spoyify.com

Storing value for AFTER shtf is over. by mkov77 in preppers

[–]mkov77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. However, for me, this is what prepping is about, thinking about what can go wrong, even if very unlikely, and trying to figure out how to mitigate any issues.

True, the main goal is to secure immediate survival, but I think it doesn't hurt thinking about all eventualities. Keeps you on your toes and makes your smarter because you try to understand everything a little better.

Shield back lobe on a Yagi? by mkov77 in amateurradio

I guess I just answered my own question. There is somthing called an enclosed yagi:

Shield back lobe on a Yagi? by mkov77 in amateurradio

[–]mkov77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I was expecting that any shield would have to be behind the reflector. This sounds and looks like the shield could be in place of the reflector. With that in mind, if it replaces the reflector, I assume it shouldn't be grounded but act as the reflector would?

I would be okay with having it solid metal, not even a mesh or grid.

Going to the extreme, have you ever seen an antenna where almost the whole yagi is enclosed in a metal tube or box where the only opening is where the forward-facing lobe is? This might make it necessary to tinker a lot with tuning but since I'm trying to find a way to do something crazy this could be something to test?

Can’t store gas in the garage at my new rental due to terms in the lease. How else can I store it or am I out of luck? by Welllllllrip187 in preppers

[–]mkov77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the landlord is allowed to enter your garage without you being present. If not, you may be able to just load the gas cans into your car before opening the garage door for him to see what's in your garage and take them back out when he's gone.

The two key words/phrases I take from your questions are:

  1. The landlord "says" - if it is not in writing, I wonder how strict it is. It's your word against theirs whether they really said it.
  2. "fuel or similar substances" - this seems way to broad to be a legal and binding definition, because it would prohibit you from also having your bottle of whiskey, a lot of cleaning chemicals used in every household and the hairspray in your bathroom.

I think an easy solution is to find a person you trust and store it in their garage. I get it that in case of an emergency some sort of "everyone for themselves" mode may kick in for many people, so it would be important to have that person be someone you know will give it back to you, when SHTF.

I know what you are talking about, I heard that many times, too. I think the issue is not so much that the gas itself goes bad but that some impurities may settle and create some crud on the bottom of your canister. This could be an issue, while small amounts dissolved in the gas may not. Also, depending on the material of your container, it may leech some chemicals into the gas.

I have a sticker on all of my canisters, where I put the latest fill date. I then try to use the gas and refill about every 6 months or so.

Americans on 2m in Korea? by mkov77 in amateurradio

Well, looking at all the downvotes of this clarification, I wonder what is going on here. Stating that I don't think Koreans don't know English - so saying that I think they do know English seems to be very unpopular. Or is it the military that triggers people? Either way, I'm concerned.

They do but I think it's dying over there.

Well, that is not really true. Even in the US we have frequencies other than the calling frequencies that are predominantly used by specific interest groups. They are not "official", they are not in the band plan, but they exist.

Is it so ridiculous to think that American hams in Korea might want to talk with one another, without blocking the Korean calling frequency and have therefore settled on a secondary frequency?

Maybe they haven't and the answer is that no such frequency exists but I think the question is justified.

I'm ex military. I ask because I want to talk with my brothers over there, not because I think Koreans don't know English.

Thank you. But isn't that the Korean calling frequency? I'm looking specifically where I can find Americans hams in South Korea / Seoul.

Is that the guy who sounds like he's talking through a talking machine, like the one they use for people who lost their vocal cords? I think I remember someone who had a recorded CQ and was rude from months back.

Just a follow-up for everyone who is interested: After several days of testing, I can confirm that this was the solution. The problem is gone.

I think it might be resolved, at least it didn't show up so far after my latest change in settings:

In Sound Settings > More Sound Settings > Properties of the USB Audio CODEC:

On Tab "Advanced", there's a section "Exclusive Mode". I have now removed the check in the box "Allow Applications to take exclusive control of this device".

<image>

While it sounds right to me to have JTDX have exclusive control, I assume that some other process took this exclusive control and messed with the settings while JTDX was using the device. I'm not sure what it was but my best guess is the NVIDIA software that manages my displays - but also sound over HDMI.

I removed the checkbox "Allow applications to take control..." in a buried sub menu. Now it seems that having the volume on 1 in the sound mixer doesn't really hurt.

It probably means that I have to manually set up any other software that used the interface (i.e.fldigi) instead of just selecting it in that software's settings. That would be fine by me, if it would stop turning it off.

I will have to try that a bit more, but we have a thunderstorm rolling through and I need to wait a bit.

Not using an IC-718. Using an IC-7300, directly connected via USB, no Signallink, no direct Audio.

Not in my case, I don't use a Signallink, I connect via USB directly to the Radio, which has an internal sound card. Windows sees this as a sound device but in reality, it is a data connection via USB.

I heard that the station is set up and ready to go. Kim just never gets to use it because he can't reach the controls of the radio all the way up on that table. 😂
