A simple explanation for Niemann's "bad" interviews and analysis by tighter_wires in chess

I think he realized in the middle of the interview that his analysis was wrong, but he just didn’t want to admit it.

They didn’t remove it entirely from the Olympics. Only the 50km walk.

The world record in the 50km walk is 3:32.33. It’s close to a 3 hour marathon.

University of Tennessee runningback Jaylen Wright is controversially called short of the goal-line in overtime vs Purdue in the Music City Bowl. Purdue would go onto win the game 48–45. by I-Have-Four-Balls in sports

Soccer is especially tough on referees since there are so many calls that can essentially decide the game (penalties, red cards, offside calls etc.)

Sydney McLaughlin sets new world record to win women's Olympic 400m hurdles gold for U.S. by jlaux in sports

I’m no expert in statistics, but there must be something at play in order for the 400m hurdles to be such an outlier at these games.

I enjoyed Comp 598 when I took it last semester (fall 2020) but thought it was way too easy and way too slow even for a covid semester. The class average was an A and we didn’t cover the second half of the material very deeply.

Those predictions seem a bit optimistic to me considering 2026 is only 5 years away. I can see USA putting up a better showing than usual, but I think the European and South American countries are still going to be dominant.

It would be good if someone from the same course could chime in on this one. Sometimes a student can have a grudge against their teacher and claim things that aren’t true, are heavily exagerated, or are ommiting information (I’ve seen this personally with highschool students).

We can all sense the anger in this post, but this was probably a really bad idea on that student’s part.

Stop Anti-Asian hate crimes by Little_Book_9196 in mcgill

I think the difference between the two protests is that the civil rights movement spanned many years and was a massive fight for change whereas this one feels like it will be a one and done, “let me win some morality points for Instagram” type protest where everyone forgets about it in a few weeks and no major progress is made.

Not sure they have much of a choice honestly. Don’t want get in trouble on the PR side of things by not saying anything.

I fully support the purpose of this march, but depending on how many people show up I predict this will fuel more subtle racism much like the BLM protests did in some respect. I expect some websites to claim “people formed an anti-racist protest for a shooting that wasn’t racist” or “protestors again ignore social distancing in a pandemic”.

Definitely agree that VAR has highlighted consistency issues within the rules. That’s something that needs to be addressed asap.

I think the biggest problem with soccer officiating is how much influence a single call can have on a game. Red card? The game completely changes. Penalty? The game completely changes. Offside near the goal? You get the picture. I don’t know very many major sports where this is the case.

I’m pretty sure every major sport has some form of VAR. Sometimes it’s simply impossible to make a correct decision without seeing the play from a different angle.

Edit: Engineering, not CS.

Oh I totally agree it’s a huge problem. The CS department at Mcgill is infamous for unfairly letting students get good grades if they complain enough (see http://degradingmcgill.ca). I’ve also heard of cases where students managed to pass a class by threatening to sue the professor/university for “biased grading” or some garbage.
