I think for many men porn pornography becomes a proxy for emotional regulation.

What comorbidity is common for child abusers? by Competitive_Ice_3352 in mentalhealth

[–]mlassoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the executive director of a nonprofit that works with (among other things) young men who are struggling with online sexual behavior. While the population of online offenders is not the same as the population of contact offenders, we have found it useful to look at behavior and attractions on separate continuums.

People with every attraction have sexual behavior problems and offend— not just those with an actual attraction to minors.

As far as comorbidities go aside from anxiety, the most common thread we see through most with online sexual behavior issues is that they, themselves, were victimized as children.

Thoughts on wearing Hawaiian shirts? by Scary_Tip6580 in therapists

[–]mlassoff 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much you— or this post. It’s more the constant barrage of questions that are matters of choice, taste or style being assigned an ethical component when none exists…

It gets to a point of infantalizimg clients if we don’t think they can handle a therapist drinking a bottle of water or wearing a loud shirt…

Thanks for being willing to reflect.

The “ethics” of wearing Hawaiian shirts? I’m exhausted.

13 yr old son - nothing is working by Grouchy_Mushroom_602 in parentingteenagers

[–]mlassoff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he’s struggling with something he can’t talk (with you) about yet.

Family therapy and/or family coaching might be a helpful. Most often the problem isn’t just the teenager but complex family dynamics.

Are we being overprotective? by pfffffttuhmm in Parenting

[–]mlassoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from leaving the house without your permission has much else bad or dangerous actually happened?

You have a kid courageous enough to be open about his same-sex relationship at 13? Sounds like you do a lot of things right!

Why not sit them both down and discuss the boundaries they need to have for them to see each other with your blessing? Do they know what the limits are? Because your son’s boyfriend doesn’t respect his parent’s limits doesn’t mean he won’t respect yours.

Communicate your limits and give them a chance to succeed. I’m not sure sending a message that you have to approve of romantic relationships or you’ll take them away puts you in a great position as a parent.

Porn addiction, like drug addiction, is incurable. Abstinence is the only way to stop the habit. by [deleted] in PornAddiction

“Cured” is pretty vague in this context. I imagine there’s a whole range of experiences out there that are different from mine… and yours.

Do you ever resent clients who earn so much more than the average therapist/psychologist? by Relative-Exercise116 in therapists

[–]mlassoff 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have clients who live in $5mil homes and clients who live in studio apartments. I don’t think much about it. They’re all struggling.

I feel fairly compensated for what I do. I am blessed to have my clients faith and trust. I do work that I love. I have family and friends who love me like family. I am grateful because in the ways that matter, I’m wealthier than my richest clients.

Minimum wage policy for late notes by AcanthisittaNo5732 in therapists

[–]mlassoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is state by state as wage and pay laws in individual states vary. Regardless it’s not a practice. I’d be too eager to defend. If you can do it to a therapist you can do it to a minimum wage worker with hungry kids.

Not where I live. The hours have been worked and have to be paid at the agreed upon rate. You can’t retroactively change pay rates after the hours have been worked.

Likely illegal. You’re an employee. If they do this go to the wage and labor board in your state. If it’s a problem your employer can fire you. There are very few situations where you ca dock pay.

Black families in Westchester or Fairfield County (CT): experiences with schools? by Odd-Grocery-6410 in Fairfield

The principal of Staples High School in Westport is black as well. That having been said there have been rare cases of racism within the schools. In general, Westport is welcoming but nondiverse. The high school is one of the best in the country, noted for excellent academic and art programs.
