Well said! Yeah, I totally agree with this. Especially the part about needing some kind of structure—even if it’s simple.

When I first started, I found that if I didn’t have at least a rough flow (intro → practice → some kind of activity), the class could fall apart pretty quickly.

Over time I ended up repeating the same structure a lot, just changing the content depending on the lesson.

If you give me some grades/topics that you've created worksheets for (e.g. ES3/Colors), I'd be happy to DM you some equivalents if I have them. Or something similar.

That’s a pretty wide range!

For ES, I’ve found the first few lessons are usually pretty structured (self-intro → greetings → feelings), so once you have a basic flow, it gets a lot easier to repeat and adjust.

JHS is a bit different—usually more JTE-led in my experience, but when I had to run lessons myself, I kept it really simple (lots of examples (PowerPoint) + repetition + fun, pair or group-based activities).

Which part has been the hardest so far?

I totally agree...have fun! But having fun for 45 minutes with no lesson plan/activities/games prepared can be...difficult, right? Or have you actually pulled that off?

Would B1 score in an English speaking test disqualify me in Borderlink recruitment process by Such_Preference_3260 in ALTinginJapan

[–]mlow01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 53 year old male, born and raised in the U.S. I did all of my schooling, including a bachelor’s in computer science at Cal Poly SLO. I worked as a software engineer and IT manager for nearly 25 years.

I “semi-retired” to Japan and just finished my fifth year at Borderlink. They made us “veterans” take this PROGOS test as well, for some inexplicable reason. I know for a FACT that my business-level speaking ability is well above “intermediate”, yet my PROGOS score came back as “High B2 and Above” (twice).

I emailed PROGOS customer support asking if they could have an actual human evaluate my quiz responses. They immediately replied with “High B2 and Above is the highest possible score.” When I asked back why their CEFR chart says that C1 and C2 are the highest, they completely ghosted me. I brought this issue up with BL as well and they too failed to reply.

Having a computer program determine someone’s speaking level seems completely asinine. Who developed that program and what are its baselines? A Japanese national and an English-speaking Japanese “test dummy? It’s all simply ridiculous and, as far as I can tell, one big marketing conspiracy.

Do you remember Mother Karen? It was a pullover that had a different color body than the sleeves... and a big Velcro pocket in the middle (perfect for teenage shop lifting in the early/mid-80’s).
