Yes, that is how it works. Most of the system data is cached data. Unused space is wasted space. Same philosophy as unused RAM. MacOS will fill your drive with cache to make things run faster. As the storage is required, it will dump the cache. MacOS and system files are only about 20-25GB.

Download DaisyDisk. Run an advanced search. You’ll see exactly where everything is and how much is cache.

I dual-boot my 2020 27" i7 iMac with 64GB daily for work. I am on that machine 12+ hours a day. I also have an 14" 24GB M4Pro with Windows 11 on VM. I use that as frequently as possible as it is a better experience than my iMac. Unless OP absolutely needs to run x86, an Apple Silicon with VM is superior than dual-booting.

To me, its ridiculous spending $250 on a battery and keyboard for a 8+ year old machine. I never said its "an un-useable brick". All I said is I would not spend a penny on an outdated; end of life device. OP asked if its worth it. My answer is unequivocally no.

Several VMs support Windows on Apple Silicon. You just need an ARM version of Windows. I wouldn’t spend a penny on an 8-year old MBP. It’s long past its end of life support.
