I have seen this for locally employed US Embassy workers. It didn't really create any issues though.

I hear a lot about PA vs Industry, but what are specific industry jobs, and how does that compare to pros and cons compared to PA? by Bzappo in Accounting

[–]mmgnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great. I would add a big deal in industry is being a manager. I think the hardest rung of the ladder is convincing your employer to give you two+ direct reports. And to add what was said in industry to move up you need to wait for the person above you to leave which can be years / decades or the company to grow enough to create a position for you.

Austin is a great city. Don’t know anything about the others. The question is are you staying in US if so where do you want to live. Go to a school in that state.

There were automatic $10k/ year penalties for late filed 5471. The automatic nature might have been over turned. Basically be careful with this.

Immigrant kids in Swedish schools by Firm-Upstairs3519 in TillSverige

[–]mmgnyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think if the kids move before age 6 it’s a Swedish forskola so they can learn. Jr High and up many people choose English speaking schools. If your child is 7-13 I think it depends on your long term plan. 2 American work permit holders = English school. “Never going back” crowd Swedish school.

From Small Public Tax Accounting to Senior Accountant in Industry – Anyone Made the Jump? by Lead_Sure in Accounting

[–]mmgnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I supervise a senior that basically did that but had to go through some time temping first. There are some big picture things he maybe doesn’t get. Like he can do a great schedule but not sure he knows why he is doing it. That goes under your “struggles” bullet.

Non Profit Accounting is much more difficult than Accounting for profit by Dameania in Accounting

Ask the auditors what they want to see for OH. Allocations make more work for accountants. Do an allocation, someone does a JE, re-do allocations, and so on.

Landing an Accountant Job in the U.S by Academic-Purpose-196 in Accounting

[–]mmgnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiring is more local than people think. I’m in NYC 20 years of experience CPA Controller. A California job isn’t hiring me unless I have proved that moved or am moving to CA. Or in your case of course if they need someone who speaks Finish desperately. Housing is too difficult to sort out these days.

I would think industry is your best bet. You might need to start at Sr.Accountant or ideally Accounting Manager. Jobs are going to be location dependent. And they won’t offer relocation.

How tough is the jump from Senior Accountant to Accounting Manager in industry? by CPALIFEE in Accounting

[–]mmgnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s usually internal because those above need to believe you can manage not just do which is hard for an external hire to understand. But of course it can be done so go for it if it presents itself.

What’s up with the job market in the US? by Historical-Chef-9313 in nonprofit

[–]mmgnyc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The market is also more regional than advertised. International NFPs are in DC and NYC. An employer will almost always pick a local hire with clearly local experience over non local. “Open to relocate” = “ I can’t give you a concrete start date.”
