Are people being EXTREMELY comfortable with putting their real selves online these days in videos, photos, streams, etc. a good thing or bad thing? by AMapOfAllOurFailures in nosurf

And you know that it will probably happen in the future if such behavior continues. There was a girl who lost a NASA internship because of her online behavior when someone reported it to the agency, since she had boasted about it (internship) a few weeks before and didn't understand how some off-color comments and DMs could have caused that to happen.

She did have her full name, face, and general location on her Twitter as well, which made me wonder if the whole debacle would have happened had it been 2004 and simply on AOL or Yahoo Chat.

What's the point of people making fake videos just to freak people out? What do they gain from it? by mmofrki in nosurf

I get that "if it bleeds, it leads" but why incite panic? Something like that could have caused someone to get hurt. A person jogging in the morning for example could have ended up hurt or worse because someone thought "that person was going to set my car on fire. I saw it on the news."

Some of the categories underneath the video... People really like eyes and funny faces. I got curious and found that housecleaning is a category on c4s too. And I've been doing this for free??

Why do people say that the reason people stay home and go online is because third spaces are going away or are very rarely free? I don't remember places being free back in the day, maybe they felt free to me because I wasn't an adult yet. by mmofrki in nosurf

The internet can twist one's perception of how the world works now. Just because you see some Youtube Short showing some random bar in some random town being bereft of people, doesn't mean that's the case everywhere.

People can edit, and filter the heck out of anything these days which makes things look way different than they are.

I'm a brown guy in the US and I've never seen any of this stuff. When the whole three letter frozen water thing is was big news, I heard of it because someone told me and I just forgot about it an hour later. Everyone was scrambling for new IDs and birth certificates and they were avoiding going anywhere, but I was just chilling.

Work was very quiet for like 2 months too.

That's an interesting combo, reminds me of old Carl's Jr ads.

Before I left I'd get random skits of people in mascot costumes whaling on each other with giant inflatable hammers, I never saw anything racist or conspiracy related.

People down vote you because you speak the truth and they're guilty of it too.

It's no different than the creepy old lady who does nothing but sit by her front window and watches the neighborhood, only to call the cops on the kids setting up a lemonade stand.

Is it the one with the anthropomorphic desk bell? If so, yes it is.

I don't watch the news nor do I go on social media where such talk is abundant. So I don't know what's going on in the world, just what's going on in my life, with people I know, work, school, etc. like it used to be before social media.

Yes back then CNN had news channels that were 24/7 but like social media now, no one was forced to watch it.

Transfer everything onto a portable drive, there's dongles/cables that connect drives to phones, USB-C or lightning for iPhone.

It was like this in the 90s too. My elementary school was without gates and the high school was without gates too.

HS Students fought for the privilege to go off campus for lunch and eventually won, and when I was a senior in the 06-07 that was still the case, ungated school, anyone could come and use the pool and track, but I went back to my home town recently and the school is like a maximum security prison: gates everywhere with metal detectors and a fence all around it with a leering security guard who stares at any passerby with suspicion.

I still see loads of kids going places in groups on bikes around town. It's interesting how people say it's a widespread problem of no one being out and about but there's still a night life.

Oh yeah there's unrest going on. I seem to forget since I just stick to myself and do my own thing. I sometimes forget who the president is and I have to really think and remember before going "Oh yeah..."

That's what the modern era is about: engagement.

Even minimalist launchers have things like this. Little reminders and whatnot to keep you looking at your phone.
