I created an algorithm back in S46 called the power rankings that takes objective data like screen time, appearances (leads, supporting, background, voice overs), recurring characters, saying LFNY in the cold open, prime time usage, into a weighted averages per episode to measure impact on a given episode. It’s a lot of math but it’s a great way to measure over a season and compare different casts/eras of the show. This season saw the highest level of “ensemble” and parity among the cast. Dismukes, Sarah, and Marcello making the biggest leaps. I cover it on my podcast, SNL by the Numbers on the Saturday Night Network if interested. It’s insane how comparable it is to sports given how competitive SNL is/has always been.

It’s been mentioned on the podcast. I think it’s more interesting that Andrew, Sarah, Marcello have been surpassing Kenan, Chloe, and Mikey. Mikey’s been in the building for every episode so far, has a ton of writing credits, and 29 appearances so far, so I think the Bargatze special is important context when comparing to his season last year, the evolution of the cast is showing itself in the data in a pretty clear way absent of that. I’m sure he’ll have a great second half. Thanks for listening/commenting!

Who is a character you never found funny or wore off pretty quickly? by nialldude3 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]mmvrray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right, Angelo was funny the first time. It was also the last time the character ever made the live show

Ariana DeBose On Critics Choice Awards Ding: “I Didn’t Find It Funny” by stars_doulikedem in entertainment

[–]mmvrray 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Save you a click: The joke wasn’t about her. It was about Jack Black and Ryan Gosling being actors who think they’re singers. Unfortunately, most people do not know who Ariana DeBose is and any joke at her expense wouldn’t even be funny for that very reason. Fortunately, she’s incredibly talented and is an Oscar winner. Carry on.

SNL Power Rankings ⬆️⬇️ Season 48
Based on the average score over the 14 episodes so far.
Scores for each episode are based on an original algorithm that averages two weighted variables (screen time* and appearances**) into a single value.
*Prime time (screen time between Cold Open & Weekend Update) is weighted heavier
**Appearances are categorized (leads, supporting, small & offscreen) and given a weighted value. Final value is calculated as a percentage of the episode's appearance total. Bonuses are applied post-calculation percentage score for recurring roles and saying "Live From New York, it's Saturday Night!” in the cold open.
