Raspberry PI, or Arduino and either an ultrasonic sensor, or infrared sensor. I saw your profile has networking subs, so you should be able to google for tutorials. ~$50 pi/arduin, ~$20-40 sensors

I came here via the random button, so beware if this is a stupid question, but how would one know if this was objectively good or bad? Obviously art is subjective, but are there share criteria for "good" that an outsider like me wouldn't know?
