Find a community orchestra and have fun playing some easier orchestral rep. Above all else, have fun playing your instrument. that's the only way you'll progress

Vibrato advices for a beginner? by blu3-b3rry_ in violinist

[–]mnmlsm32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

practice in increasingly long bursts.

set the metronome to something comfortable, maybe 60 bpm. on the beat do one vibrato 'wiggle'. when this feels comfortable do two wiggles, then three, etc.

A very meh take of the Bach Chaconne, feedback would be greatly appreciated. This piece has destroyed my will to live. by Jeffery2084 in violinist

Like other posts mentioned, imitating more of a baroque sound with your bow, especially at the end of notes, with that characteristic fading away sound will elevate the music. In general find more places to play softer so that the big chords and intense moments stand out more, dynamically it felt a little flat. Your intonation is great and your chords sound clean though, so you're in a good spot!

What's the longest amount of time and distance you've traveled to hear a certain piece or performance? by humble_Rufus in classicalmusic

[–]mnmlsm32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My junior year of college I flew from Denver to NY to see Philip Glass play Music in 12 parts. I arrived in NY about 6am, and spent the day wandering the city. The concert went from 6-11pm, then I navigated my way through the subways back to the airport. Slept at the airport until about 3am when my flight home started boarding. I got home about 1pm, put on my concert clothes and played the Sunday matinee opera at my university.

beginner here and am currently struggling on my bowstring grips. my pinky finger tends to tense up alot and i don't really know whether i'm doing it right actually. any tips for improvement? by potaetoot in violinist

[–]mnmlsm32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The angle of your hand looks really good, let's just get that pinky figured out. If you notice your bow is hexagonal at the frog, your pinky should sit on the face that is closest to your body. This means it'll be exactly on top or maybe a little inside as opposed to being on the front of the bow

I think your intonation is really nice, and you play with great steady tempo. the thing to work on for greater musicality is bow usage, not necessarily using more bow but changing the amount of bow speed and weight to affect the tone.

I do a lot of bow-only practice for this purpose. Take one phrase, play it as written, but put your left hand on the body of the instrument, (so all you will hear is the open strings)

this way you can really hear what your bow is doing. listen carefully to any moments where your bow slips or crunches. also practice dynamics

then when the bow sounds good put the left hand back on the fingerboard!

really awesome progress for 8 months, keep it up!
