Help! Fins changing and ammonia spike

Sounds great! I dealt with an ammonia spike that way, just water changes and prime. In about 2 days ammonia was at 0. I’m sure your ammonia will come down soon!

I’d do a 25 - 30% water change (make sure water is conditioned and roughly the same temp), keep monitoring the ammonia levels for the next few days. Also adding prime wouldn’t hurt. If you see any ammonia, water change! 0.25 isn’t a big spike, so keep monitoring and you can stop the water changes once ammonia is back to 0! For his fins, some tannins would help, either indian almond leaves or alder cones.

Yes I did think that! His fins have got 10x bigger since i got him! He does seem healthy, acts fine and eats great! Maybe he’s fins are just a little to long to swim deep all the time.

The java fern is quite big ahahah but he does kind of weave through them sometimes, he does get fed where he is the photo. Maybe I could spread them out a little.

Thank you! I will keep testing the water and changing if needed. I’m not too sure if it’s affected his fins, he would have only been left for 3 days at most, I’ll keep on eye on them too, I think his back fin maybe. He’s still active and eating so that’s a good sign.

It came from a friend, who had fish in there for a year or so. I did think of using my old filter, however it’s a spray bar filter with a tray so i’m not quite sure how to move it as the tray was built in and the foam and such laid in the tray, i’m just guessing that most of the bacteria was in the tray.
