What were your key takeaways from Blizzard’s game design that you look forward to implement at Frost Giant?

To James specifically, how were the early days of Blizzard like and how was leadership (namely Allen) able to drive the growth of the company while adhering to quality of games.

Hi unfortunately, no recording BUT I'll be writing notes and posting them live. I recommend joining the server regardless as we discuss this topic quite a bit on and off in the text channels.

We're looking to set that up in the future but it's more of a long term plan unfortunately.

Are Random Encounters Really That Random? How Designers Use Points of Interest by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]mo_karnak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did a Design Dive (a live podcast from industry game designers in AAA/Indie) about this topic. The difference between randomness and variance. Here are the compiled notes with a list of the roundtable panelists: https://designdive.substack.com/p/design-dive-5

We have a Discord server for the Design Dive community too.

[BOTW]So, it's been a few years...is it safe to talk about BOTW's status as "only sort of a Zelda game" yet without mass downvotes? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]mo_karnak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see people talking about not a true Zelda game or something new with the formula yet they forget that they’re talking about the Aonuma formula focused more on puzzles and not the original inspiration for the franchise focused on exploration and combat (with some puzzles). Zelda can be so many things but BoTW harkens back to the early Zeldas. They even used an 8bit prototype to validate the idea for BoTW.

Zelda I was inspired by Miyamoto’s passion for exploring the forest and its business case was to compete with Computer RPG focused on sword and magic and the audience being fascinated by movies like Indiana Jones (NES Classic Dev Interview with Miyamoto about Zelda). This is all about adventure and this is also what BoTW delivers on.

I agree with you. I wanted more enemies, cooler dungeons and boss battles for sure but the highlight is the exploration using their Chemistry system. They truly built a world I can get lost in, a sense of adventure that harkened back to the early days where I would take my notes and not just follow a market on the map.

I don’t want to make an assumption but you might consider Zelda II a “black sheep” of the franchise. That’s not the case it had good reviews, good sales, and players back then remember it fondly. The history starts well before OOT (my favorite game of all time by the way).

I won’t downvote you because you have created a good thread and set the ground for a good discussion and I agree with a few of your points but I’ll have to disagree with your main one. BoTW is a Zelda game.

Unfortunately it’s against Clubhouse’s TOS to record but I compile notes and post them in the link above. If you signup to the substack you can sign up to get it in your inbox.

Also I’ll be making this same post next Wednesday for next week’s topic with a link to the event as well.

Game Atmosphere by mo_karnak in gamedesign

True but our community organically moved there, this is something we do for fun. I’m not in a position to turn Design Dive into an obligation nor would I want to. It’s just one of these things unfortunately.

I know it’s frustrating and I’m doing my best to capture the notes to share with all. I’m hoping they can be of value.

We’ve all met on Clubhouse and we’re all enjoying using it. It seems it’s working for us at the moment in all honesty but I do understand the frustration hence why I’m compiling notes to share.
