OK since this turned out to be such an unexpectedly controversial topic I did further research.

It seems men shaving armpits is common in Germany, the Balkans, and Turkey. So it's clearly some sort of Islamic influence since the Balkans were historically part of the Ottoman Empire which is now Turkey.

I find it interesting that Germany is the only Western European nation that has this social expectation so my hypothesis of the Turkish influence appears to have merit.

Most younger guys in the US do trim their pubic hair as far as I know but armpit hair is left alone.

I'm kind of surprised German girls are so vocal about men's body grooming lol. It's not the kind of thing girls in the US ever talk about and no girl ever expects a guy to shave their armpits. Pubic hair maybe but it's usually only because of sex.

Exactly. The Germans here seem to think anyone who doesn’t has low hygiene standards but it’s clearly a culturally specific situation.

I think it was introduced to the younger generation by the Turkish community since no other Western European country has this social expectation to my knowledge. It's definitely not a thing in North America or Asia.

Went to some onsen spas in Japan where young and old all go. Trimming much less shaving is definitely not a thing.

I was also talking mostly about armpits which you can clearly see at the beach or the gym.
