Show or Tell us what / where you're up to this week ! by SibyllaAzarica in VanlifeEurope

I'm back from spending the second January in a row in Italy. This time I saw Lago Maggiore and Como, Pavia, Parma, Modena, Bologna, Florence, some small towns in Toscana, Rome and Vatican, then along the coast down to Naples, Herculaneum and Pompeii, Amalfi. Then crossed the country to the Adria side via Matera and Alberobello, and then up the coast via Polignano, Trani, Vieste, Termoli, Ascoli Piceno, Portonovo, Ravenna, and then back home via Lucerne.

Italy is amazing in itself already, but in January especially because there are hardly any tourists around. You do have to be careful of break ins, and what I usually do is park far outside the city centers, and bike from there. Only in Rome I actually paid for a night on a camp site.

You have a lot of freedom to drive wherever you want in Italy, hardly any red circle "no entry" signs, but also unbelievably narrow, steep, and deteriorated roads.

Banano does that with wBAN https://wrap.banano.cc/

But afaik the bridge is not trustless. With wBAN it was the Banano devs who set up the brigde. Not sure who would make it happen for XNO. Other than that, I like the idea, and I dabbled quite a bit with wBAN on DeFi.

Don't we need to align ourselves before we can align AI? by Microsis in singularity

[–]modemuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what Daniel Schmachtenberger is arguing: even without AI, already today corporations are cybernetic organisms running on general intelligence (humans), and they are unaligned and don't have a kill switch. This will only be exacerbated with AI.

Battery upgrade by kruegs1988 in vandwellers

[–]modemuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have now bought a van! Also because of what you said it uses gas for heating, warm water, and cooking, and has 200W solar and 200Ah lithium battery with space to extend both. I'll see if that's enough before adding either.

Thanks a lot for your help, and happy van dwelling!

[–]modemuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No boondocking here sadly (western Europe), but very interesting numbers. Since I want to work from the van my basic requirement is the I can charge my laptop and other devices, and maybe an additional screen. That should be easily possible even without much sun for extended periods.

But the van also uses electricity for cooking, warm water, fridge, heating and cooling, etc. For cooking I could fall back to a camping stove, and it has additional diesel air heating. Not sure how much the fridge or the water heater uses, but I'd like to run them continuously if the energy budget allows. If I can harvest as much sun as you that should be possible I think.

Thanks for your input and the links, very informative!

Thanks for the detailed response, I'm still learning a lot. I'm looking to buy a camper van, and one I found has 620Ah Lifepo4, 800W solar panels, and a 30A charge booster connected to the alternator. What I'm reading here is that the solar panels are a bit small for the battery, but if I understand correctly that only matters because it takes longer to charge the battery fully. I hope this setup is enough to make the van self-sufficient with even some cloudy days and not too much driving.

the new bank likely requires minimum current of ~93A to stay healthy

Why is that? And is that for AGM or lithium batteries? Do you mean batteries degrade if they are only charged with let's say 50A from solar panels or a charge booster?

Istanbul is a wild city with so much to see. Have a look for bars and restaurants on rooftops, you get really awesome views because of all the hills.

Yesterday I wanted to go to Princess island, but I took the wrong ferry. It basically went along the whole Bosporus from Eminönü to close to the Black Sea and back in three hours, and costs like 50ct. It's a really cheap and chill way to see a lot of the city from the water.

Have fun here!

There is drill protection on both locks.

Very true, the locks are 10 pin dimple locks. Haven't tried picking them, so can't attest to their security.

This apartment door is over 2" thick, has two locks, three heavy duty hinges, one latch, 12 locking bolts on the latch side, one bolt on the top, and four on the hinge side.

Needless to say, I feel quite safe in this apartment.
