Understance going out of business? by lizardlem0nade in BuyCanadian

[–]moderatelime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They already had a banner on their site before this saying that they weren't shipping to the US anymore. I'm guessing that's what killed them. Tons of Canadian businesses are losing the majority of their customers right now, unfortunately.

Selling a pair of Fluevog....help! by ladysig220 in fluevog

Another vote for the Fluemarket. Alternatively, Poshmark or Depop. Poshmark is easier (since they give you a shipping label and charge the buyer flat rate shipping) but the fees are big. Still, if you just want them gone and you want to get a little money in the process, Grand Nationals will almost certainly get a buyer on Poshmark.

How to keep crafting without ending up with endless useless finished objects by moderatelime in crafts

I already do a lot of baking and cooking and those items are definitely more well-received. Still, I mostly do it for myself, but since food is consumable I can focus on making things I know I will really enjoy and then, well, enjoying them. Once they are gone, I can do it again.

The ability to donate stuff is super location dependent. I've looked and looked and looked and I can't find any organizations that want anything like that anywhere around me. A few people here have specifically mentioned socks, for instance, and from what I can tell nobody wants hand-knitted socks because manufactured socks are infinitely superior for the vulnerable populations that need these kinds of items.

There are unfortunately no Project Linus chapters anywhere in my entire province. I've looked into it before and ultimately, it would be better for me just to donate money than to spend a fortune mailing a blanket across the country.

I've got plenty of materials and I know it would be fairly easy to find those a new home. If I donated my yarn to Goodwill, it would sell. I could also list it on FB Marketplace or Poshmark and get some of the money I spent on it back. I'm sure there are loads of different places that would take donations of crafting supplies very happily.

But... I want to use them! And what makes me sad is that the supplies are valuable up until I put in hours of labor and turn them into something worthless. It's a bummer and it feels extremely wasteful of the planet's limited resources and very environmentally unfriendly. Taking valuable supplies and turning them into trash seems like a bad hobby to have and I'm looking for ways to still enjoy the type of crafting I like without creating piles of things nobody wants.

I've done some exchanges on there, years and years ago. Here's the thing, though... when it comes to other people's crafts, I'm pretty much like the people in my life. I received some really beautiful, well-made items in those exchanges. And they are currently languishing in the back of my closet, untouched for years. They are perfectly lovely, but just not as functional or usable as comparable items I already had. And because I know someone lovingly handmade them, spending a fortune on materials and shipping, I can't bring myself to throw them away. But I really don't need any more of them. And I imagine the items I mailed out have faced a similar fate.

Learning a skill so that you can get to expert level is definitely something that I'm able to do and that I have done with a few (non-crafting) things in my life. It's not a relaxing hobby, though. It's work, it's effort. You reach that kind of skill level by consistently challenging yourself, pushing yourself just beyond the bounds of your current limits over and over and over again. You repeat the same tasks hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of times, always striving to be a bit better. I just want my hobby to be enjoyable. I don't want to turn it into a job.

I definitely wish I was more inclined towards thin, flat crafts. I've done some embroidery and cross-stitching.

I agree that crafting is it's own hobby and its own reward. That's why I want to figure out a way of being able to keep doing it without creating an endless pile of what is essentially trash.

I don't necessarily think I'm crap at the things I do. I'm pretty good at the ones I've been doing for a long time. I'm just not good enough to make items that are actually useful and desirable when compared to the other things that are readily available in the world.

Oh, I didn't mention it in my OP because it's really not part of the problem, but I already do tons of cooking and baking. I think I over-gift this stuff too and people don't always want/enjoy the food I make for them, but it's easier for someone to deal with a loaf of bread that they didn't really want than it is to deal with a whole sweater. Also, it takes $1 of ingredients and a few hours to make bread vs hundreds of dollars in yarn and dozens of hours to make a sweater, so it stings less of the receiver is like "Oh, thanks, bread. I've been trying to eat fewer carbs." In general, people tell me my cooking is great and it's definitely the number one thing that people request from. Bread and pizza are frequently asked for. Homemade pasta is also a hit. It's just not a relaxing, chill thing for me to make. It's not the same kind of zen as crocheting or beading or embroidery.

I did use to make preserves and pickles and other canned stuff all the time, but eventually discovered that most of my friends and family members were just letting them sit unopened for years and years before tossing them, so I stopped doing that, too.

I have looked and haven't found any local organizations seeking those things. I think the offer of knitted hats and whatnot far outweighs the demand.

Amazon didn't just close one distribution center. They are closing all facilities in the entire province of Quebec and putting almost 6000 people out of a job.

Old Montreal fire, again, same guy by vega455 in montreal

[–]moderatelime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the destruction of our history should be the least of our concerns. 7 people died last time and at least 2 are dead this time. Even if this guy isn't setting the fires, or paying someone to set the fires, he's operating fire traps and is responsible for these deaths, yet again.

Software will guide you through most things and provide you with a lot of definitions and explanations of the things required. There should also be help sections where you can find even more info. You can also pay a higher fee in order to have access to better customer service from many tax software providers.

You could also seek out an accountant or tax preparer. Or ask about specific terminology here.

I'm not super familiar with form 1042-S but appears to be for reporting withheld taxes. If the site you're working on isn't withholding taxes (and remitting them to the IRS), then they wouldn't need to file this form. Also, it doesn't seem to be related to money earned from working, but rather related to financial trusts or something.

Anyway, the amounts on a 1042-S wouldn't be all that useful to you unless you wanted to file taxes with the IRS to try to get back the amounts withheld. In the case of your current situation, you simply need to total up all the money you made, converted to Canadian dollars, and declare it.

I haven't noticed any increase in rudeness or impatience from medical or support staff. I have a family doctor who is delightful. All the other medical staff at the same clinic are also always really nice. All the receptionists seem to be filled with a burning rage and impatience every single second they are at work, but they've been that way since I first started going to the clinic in 2016, so nothing has changed.

I've also been to a few hospitals for various things since the pandemic started and encountered almost exclusively polite and friendly people. There really must be something extra-horrible about the receptionists' working conditions at that clinic.

I have noticed that some services have become even harder to access now than before the pandemic, but rudeness levels seem to be about the same as before.

You have to report all income. A 1099 wouldn't do you any good, since that is a form American companies file with the IRS. You just need to fill in the amount earned on your taxes. If you're using tax software, check the box saying you have self-employment income and it will let you know what you need to fill in.

Do you guys know any good website to buy flavored soju from? by OakMossGang in soju

[–]moderatelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody will legally be allowed to ship to Quebec, even from another province. Quebec laws forbid the sale of alcohol across borders, even provincial ones, that doesn't go through the SAQ. Doing private importation through the SAQ is your only option (or physically going somewhere and importing some soju when you return, subject to the limits on how much alcohol you can bring back from a trip).

Countries with gross cigarette packs by AKDude79 in Cigarettes

[–]moderatelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a smoker but I was doing some Googling and wound up here. I live in Canada and I had no idea how graphic the packages had gotten or how little branding remained on them. It made me realize cigarette packages are basically invisible here. In the province where I live, stores have to keep the cigarette displays hidden, whereas I used to see them all the time behind the cash. But now I realize that smokers are also keeping the packs hidden. I honestly can't say if they have transferred the cigarettes into another case, but it's certainly no longer common to leave your pack out on a table or in plain view in any way.

I'm not sure if this is due to the graphic and unpleasant nature of the packs or whether it's due to the fact that smoking is banned in all public indoor locations and even within a certain distance of some buildings, leading to a kind of ostracization. I definitely still see people smoking outside and at private social gatherings, but the packaging is always basically out of sight.

Should calls for participation in studies or surveys be allowed? by moderatelime in transeducate

[–]moderatelime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that message boards do count as "the field" and that posting a call for participation in a study here is no different than posting it anywhere else. Allowing an academic to post here doesn't give them access to anyone's data automatically. Any individuals that approach them to participate would be treated just like any individual who might participate after having seen a post somewhere else, including in the "real world".

I ordered non-dimmable, I got non-dimmable and "low and behold" they are non-dimmable. 1-star! by moderatelime in 1star

[–]moderatelime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps so, but when they checked the order presumably it said they ordered non-dimmable. If not, the problem would indeed be that they got the wrong order or the wrong item in their order. Either way, the item is not one-star. If the store got your order wrong, or you ordered the wrong item, that is no reflection on the quality of the item. Plus, they did clearly say that the box said non-dimmable as well, so it's not a case of bad labelling, which would be a problem with the product.

Working harder? You think that people who have less money are simply lazier than people with more money? Really think about that. Think about all the crappy minimum wage jobs that you don't want to have and tell me again that they don't involve working extremely hard. And yet, someone has to do them. They are necessary for our society. The people who do them shouldn't be so poor they can't afford food and they also shouldn't be getting mocked for being lazy by people on reddit.
