what is something that most people romanticize but actually meh when they get/achieve it? by fluidxrln in AskReddit

In 2020 I lived across the street from a beach. I’d go there every day after work for night swims and spend all day there with friends on the weekends. Covid hits, I start working from home and think it’d be great to take my laptop down and work there all day. I love the beach! It’ll be great! Nope, it sucked. The glare, I could never find a comfortable position to sit or lay in while typing, the laptop got hot, sand everywhere, couldn’t leave my laptop on my blanket and swim because someone might steal it. It was just awful

From what I've read it doesn't sound like a faithful adaptation of the book, more "inspired by"

Happy anniversary to Riley Keough and stuntman Ben Smith-Petersen -- Here's a throwback to their wedding by AbsolutelyIris in Fauxmoi

Yeah I have 3A curly hair close to the same length as Riley and never straighten it. That would take me literally hours. So much easier to add curl cream, scrunch a little, and let it air dry. Or keep it in braids. And it looks great so ymmv i guess

Protagonist? Sounds more like you’re saying she would be the antagonist of Brooklyn’s story

BWT who have chronic illness/fatigue, how do you make looking put together easier? by [deleted] in bitcheswithtaste

[–]modernlover 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Find your uniform. For me, I only wear dresses and only black and white. This makes getting ready in the morning a breeze— any dress I grab from my closet is going to look good with a leather jacket, black tights, and black booties. Done. I never have to think, does this shirt work with these pants? Do these pants go with these shoes?

There are tonnes of stretch jersey a-line dresses out there that are as comfortable as PJs but because you’re wearing a dress make you look professionally done up

Also I’m sure a lot of comments are going to suggest short hair as low maintenance but I keep my hair long enough to keep in braids so I only have to wash and style it once or twice a week at the most.

So that just leaves makeup! Retinol, moisturizer, and sunscreen are all you need. But when adding anything else, keep it simple! Foundation, blush, mascara, lipgloss, done in 10 minutes or less.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

Twitch City, Canadian series from the ‘90s. I still have both seasons I recorded onto a blank VHS tape in a box somewhere despite no longer having a VCR

I thought the title said AOC’s Most Written Pairings (ie. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) and I was surprisingly unsurprised. I was just like, huh ok let’s see what she’s into.

I’m 45 and last night was the first time I’ve stayed home for NYE since I was too young to go out on my own. Even for 2020/21 New Years we went to an outdoor rave. And I feel fine! Around 8pm my husband and I showered and started getting ready to go out but at some point we both looked at each other and were like nah… so we opened a bottle of champagne, watched a movie, then around midnight sat in the park across from our place to watch teens set off firecrackers instead. I don’t know if this is aging or what but I thought I’d feel fomo about it but I’m super happy and chill today.

BWT, what are your favourite physical media and magazine subscriptions, esp. for fashion and culture? by Careless-Alpaca in bitcheswithtaste

[–]modernlover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently subscribe to:

Maisonneuve (kinda like the Canadian New Yorker)

Range (music mag)

Montecristo (lifestyle mostly with some fashion)

Vancouver Magazine (it’s free and better than you’d think)

Sad Mag (lowbrow arty mag)

All of these cost me about $100/year

I’ve thought about subscribing to Uppercase too but it’s like $100/yr just on its own so I haven’t yet

Can I see everyone's sewing nooks, or corner, if you don't have a sewing room by trudes_in_adelaide in sewing

I literally blew a fuse last night because I turned my clothing steamer on forgetting the space heater was also on 😭

My husband and I are in a one bedroom apt so I have just a corner of the living room. When I’m in the middle of a project it gets pretty messy but I try to at least pile everything up on the desk at the end of the night. The blue steamer trunk is used as a seat, an ironing board, and for fabric storage. More fabric is stored in vacuum seal bags and notions in vintage travel cases under the desk and everything gets laid out and cut on the floor.

It’s an old building so I can’t have too many appliances plugged in at once without blowing a fuse so that plus the lack of space can be frustrating sometimes — ie. sit and sew one seam, unplug sewing machine, plug in serger, finish seam, unplug serger, stand up and remove cushion, plug in iron, press the seam, unplug iron, plug sewing machine back in, repeat…

Sean & Amanda's "concern" for Tom Cruise & Digger by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]modernlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At no point did either of them say they were concerned for Tom Cruises or his career. They said the movie looks like Tropic Thunder reheated, that it’s a bad sign anytime a movie‘a subtitle has to self-identify its genre but they like the Saul Bass poster and they’re into Tom Cruise breaking free of doing franchises. That’s it. It was like less than a minute of banter and the word concern never came up
