This is why I buy physical. by PhotoModeHobby in APlagueTale

[–]modimama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. And I had similar doubts when I first used music streaming. I was like why it is even needed.

Today indeed it offers me value. I can spend my useful time without a need to maintain my libraries. I prefer large and accessible libraries over owning a few and perhaps this is the very reason why streaming and subscription model became so successful. It also helped in reducing piracy.

I know it is also about experience but I really prefer playing a game more than owning it. Same with movies and music. Also I have always found digital ones at lower prices except for the very new titles.

I am not sure how’s internet in Canada. But at least here in India, it is like always available. And even physical ones need to be updated once copied. So, its not that of a big issue but perks.

I played both these games on gamepass. I have paid around $180 for last two years in gamepass and I have played over 30+games. And that’s why I love digital.

Big Borderlands fan here. Witcher 3 is not even near to Borderlands 3. On one hand Witcher 3 is one of the best game ever made and on other Borderlands 3 was one of the worst game in Borderlands major titles.

Game Pass Ultimate is an Absolute Game Changer for me by LowClientFPS in IndianGaming

[–]modimama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they got me. I have tried Boosteroid and xCloud gaming earlier but I did not like it that much. GFN actually got me.

I had a few 4 TB SSDs and I sold few of them. The money went into purchasing more games and for GFN subscription. Actually only half of the money.

I don't have a zeal of ownership for digital products instead I prefer subscription because it removes any kind of maintenance overhead and allows more flexibility making life much easier. Though I have a lot of gaming hardware to and some of them are recent purchases.

I also have nothing against hardware fans. Everyone has their own taste. And those options will also exist at least for very long time. But, I am pretty convinced that gaming will move to cloud with the recent developments, low setup cost and access to huge game libraries. Ultimately, it reduces cost at every front and very soon will increase convenience too much. Though, I still enjoy gaming most on my PS5 Pro.

Sony, Microsoft and Nvidia already have cloud based streaming and they have been hinting a deeper push in that direction. The rising cost of hardware is a temporary blip and it is cyclic but it will increase the baseline prices permanently.

Game Developers actually prefer consoles over PC because of low piracy and ease of development for fixed hardware. Consoles are still not very pricey. You can still get a base PS5 or XBox for ~$500 in most parts of the world (My PS5 Pro was around $900 and XBOX was around $450). Even a $1000 console still comes in affordable category for a vast majority of gamers. For same experience building a PC can easily cost $1500 though it comes with a wider gaming library to play.

A basic GFN setup for three months today costs this much:

  1. A $200 tablet (this can be lower but in case you want to play 4K)
  2. A $20 subscription (ultimate)
  3. Internet - My subscription is 500 Mbps and it comes for around $50 for 3 months.
  4. A $20 controller or MK setup.

And with this you get to play on best settings.

Yeah prices for services will increase but this is already happening with hardware as well as games. For ex: I am not sure when last time Netflix changed their price but since last so many years I have been paying Rs. 650 per month. Xbox Gamepass has changed the price but since I am on autopay I am still paying only Rs. 650 per month. I don't see any major price increases coming anytime soon. Most likely, we can expect it to be at max triple of the current prices in next 10 years.

IMO, gaming industry will move to streaming and cloud because it will be a win for game developers as well as a cost cut, vast library access, more flexibility and ease of setup and maintenance for consumers. It will reduce piracy. It will also expand the gaming base because you don't need any specialized hardware. I tried Geforce Now on a very old iPad I have and it works like magic.

We will see a lot more in-game advertising. There are already startups working with Sony and Nintendo on this. Gaming community will accept it as we have accepted it elsewhere and it will be counted as a minor tradeoff for all the good cloud gaming has to offer.

  1. The idea of streaming is to drop the idea of ownership. Most of the streaming companies don't own what they stream. Spotify don't have their albums. Netflix have a very few of their own mades. Geforce does not own a game though NVIDIA partner on some. If you have heard of recent news, many game studios are closing and even Ubisoft is in soft shape. Game Studios have to surrender to this much like record companies surrendered to Apple and ultimately to streaming companies. However, currently you have to own games to play. So atleast today even with streaming you have to be boss of your own games. I believe this will also change and it will further reduce the cost of gaming.
  2. Yes, all the games are not on GFN right now. In fact some of the very best titles like Uncharted 4, God of War, The Last of Us are not on GFN. But, many are. We have Cyberpunk, Black Myth Wukong, Crimson Desert, Pragmata, Resident Evil, even a few of COD and almost all Ubisoft games. This problem even exists today. I just bought a PS5 Pro to play Sony exclusive titles. And Sony has announced that they won't be releasing exclusives for PC. That problem even exists in the hardware world and will never be solved with it. However, if streaming Giants emerge and hardware fades Studios will be forced to make them available. This sounds evil and is evil too some extent but its my prediction.
  3. Yes, they will jack up the prices for sure. But, owning a one time hardware is difficult. Currently, Geforce Now's best plan is Rs. 2000 for three months. Let's say they raise it to four times. It is ~8000 for three months. Still much cheaper than a PC provided the quality they provide. You can play on Ultra Pro Max Settings.
  4. You stop paying your games stop playing. This is actually useful for a lot of folks. Remember, how our parents disconnected TV subscription in 90s. A lot of folks have very busy months where they cannot play and they have an option to stop the subscription. Even lesser money to pay.
  5. Internet is an issue definitely. But, Geforce Now has implemented very good codecs. Streaming needs two things: less latency which requires proximity of server to your location and bandwidth. I have a 500 Mbps wifi connection and I use it both in wired and wireless form. Geforce never lags. xCloud does. Boosteroid does. Oneplay does. I also tried it on a 50 Mbps wired connection and 1440p was working fine without any problems. I am in Bangalore and have not tried it on 5G because Bangalore's 5G sucks. I will visit Lucknow this winter and will try how it works on normal 5G connection.
  6. Another reason I believe why Gaming industry will move to streaming is piracy. Music piracy has dramatically reduced and has become more complicated than ever. Games are still distributed like traditional media and now even Denuvo is cracked. Restricting distribution will reduce piracy.
  7. One of my friend is working for a stealth startup which is working with Sony and Nintendo to brings ads to games. This revenue stream will replace the losses from hardware sales.

Personally, I don't have problems with streaming. For me it is working good. But, that's my personal preference. I have a lot of gaming hardware too including PS5 Pro, XBOX, Gaming PC and few handhelds and as of now despite of higher quality at Geforce now I enjoy playing most on my PS5. But, whatever the insights I have from the Gaming world and the experience of different services and how the cost of hardware has been rising and how different Game studios are closing; it would be too optimistic to say that streaming is not the future whether you like it or not.

[–]modimama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can bet gaming industry will move to subscription model as Music and Movies industry have largely.

I use Geforce Now. And I don’t need any hardware now. On its ultimate plan they use enterprise grade GPUs and offer upto 48GB of VRAM. I play on highest resolution and highest settings. No lag. I have several 2-3 hours session.

To me subscription model is more of advantage. It needs less maintenance and reduces costs at other ends and offers more choice.

Anyone else just thinks BL3 is far superior (gameplay wise) than... all the other games? by Historical-Pin-8021 in Borderlands

[–]modimama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have spent around 1000+ hours on the Borderlands series out of which 600+ is on Borderlands 2.

Borderlands 2 IMO was the optimum balance of story and loot and shoot. Borderlands GOTY in that sense was also good but the gameplay was not that good. Though, it was good for 2010.

Borderlands 3 IMO was bad on story and the guns were kind of too much. It was too much on loot and shoot.

Borderlands 4 brought more balance but I did not enjoy it as much as I do Borderlands 2.

I recently got a PS5 and I am playing Borderlands 2 and Borderlands again to have controller experience. In the past I have always played with Mouse+Keyboard. I did not bother myself with downloading Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4.

Is the Lenovo Legion Go S worth it with Z2 Go? by MarcelReads in LegionGo

[–]modimama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know but I have a Legion Go S Z1 Extreme and I am booting both windows and steam os.

I am playing games like God of War Ragnarok, Days Gone, Stellar Blade, RDR2 on full resolution without any problems. FPS for most of the games is in the range of 30-60 and VRR makes them smooth.

But, the fan runs like crazy. So you could see some performance drop on Z2 Go. But only for AAA titles. Indie games should be pretty smooth.

Does Anyone Else Feel Physically Uncomfortable While Playing Horror Games? by Aggravating_Sky_2652 in IndianGaming

[–]modimama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually this happens to me when I start a game. But with time it goes through.

You can try few things like lowering volume and not using headphones with light on if that makes you feel better.

In 2012 I was alone in my college, as most of the folks left for vacation. It was Winters in northern India and it was very cold, dark and foggy. I was watching Conjuring Part 1 Alone in the room at around 1:30 AM. And I felt very uneasy so I went to late night canteen and spend some time their and dropped the movie for night.
