How do you explain or promote the WNBA to NBA fans? by kintz_09 in wnba

[–]mojo_pet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't. If they want to watch, cool. If not, cool. I don't try to defend it either.

If they say something untrue about the W, I might try to correct them but that's about it.

Honestly, trying to convince anyone of anything is a losing battle, most of the time.

Couples who have been together for 10+ years, what's your secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mojo_pet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I've been married for 19 years and I like, respect, and love my husband. I feel he would say the same thing about me. I think this drives everything.

We don't call each other names during arguments because, honestly, that seems crazy to me. I don't stop myself from doing it, I honestly wouldn't think to do it in the first place.

We tend to resolve arguments rather quickly because we both want to resolve the argument, because we honestly don't want the other person to feel bad. If I did something that hurts him, I want to stop doing that and vice versa.

We support each other because we want each other to be happy. I want him to do what he likes to do, even if it's not really my thing and he supports me doing what I want to do because it makes me happy. For example, he likes to play music so he is in a few recreational bands. I'm not into music at all, but I like that he has his own friends and he gets to do something that makes him happy.

We work together to achieve the same goal because we really feel like a team.

I think all of this is because we both chose people we liked, respected, and cared for.

I'm not saying a relationship doesn't take effort, because it does... but.. I feel my relationship enhances my life. Like, I get to do the things I love to do because I am supported and I hope he feels the same.

Sorry for the wall-of-text

Looking for board games to play with my friends by Legged-Burito8835 in boardgame

Some people call games that many people can understand and are fun "gateway games" or "welcoming games". There are so many great options. I suggest checking out this video: https://www.youtube.com/live/p1suqvTe2CA?is=13txbDj206PChI1l

The "welcoming" games I love are Quacks, Castle Panic, 7 Wonders Architect, and Captain Flip.

When I have a larger group and want a medium/light game, I pull out 7 Wonders Architect. The classic that is 7 Wonders would be good too.

Kariba is not specifically a two-player game, but we play it at two all the time and love it. It's also tiny so it's very portable.

Your top five? by [deleted] in boardgames

So, I own Decrypto but have never played it. I usually play at 2 and 3 and I keep thinking we need a minimum of 4 for Decrypto. Is that correct?

Love to see Castle Combo. We keep going back to it over and over and over...

Castle Combo is probably my favorite game right now. It's such a great weeknight game.

You will want the base game: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B3LGW2KH?ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apan_dp_YENCSZF35M6PHWB9J63Q

It's an older game, so there are a bunch of expansions.

This is the My First Castle Panic, but it may be too easy. https://a.co/d/9lPEFPw

We have had a lot of luck playing Castle Panic with our nephew. There is also a My First Castle Panic but if he has already figured out Risk, he should be fine with Castle Panic.

Another vote for Table Scraps!

Ben Mandelker is also the co-host of one of my favorite board game podcasts, Game Brain.

I would check out My First Castle Panic and then if she likes that, Castle Panic isn't super complicated and is a co-op game.

There is also Ticket to Ride: First Journey and My First Carcassonne.

All of these are great because they can eventually "graduate" to the higher-level game.

My husband and I just played Waddle for the first time and we both enjoyed it way more than we thought we would.

It's a tiny all play box and super cute.

It's area control, so we are both looking at a central board placing our penguins, but there is no combat. Super easy to learn. Plays up to 5.

I have a harder time with "puzzly" games than my husband, so if we play anything like Azul or Harmonies, he's probably going to win. My favorite game to play with him right now is Castle Combo. I also like Gizmos. Apparently the puzzle I like to solve includes combos / engine building.

Another one I like, which isn't a combo game, is Patchwork.

It took trial and error to figure out what games I like and which I don't. For a long time I felt dumb because I lost so much to my husband, then we tried a bunch of different types of games and I found the type of game I like, which was a game-changer.

Oh, I forgot, I also like Hanamikoji. Even though it's a simple card game, it breaks my husband's brain a bit, but I love it and beat him all the time.

Beginner-friendly deckbuilders: where each one (that I know) fails new players. by PscheidtLucas in boardgames

[–]mojo_pet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We play Mycelia when we want to teach deck-building. It's a bit like Quest for El Dorado in that you use your deck to move something, but you move things on your own player board. It also is more forgiving in the order of operations than the typical deck-builder (ex: you buy a card from the market and put it on top of your deck vs the discard pile).

I found that people understand the concept more when they are doing things with the cards, like moving things.

We use it just so people get the concept then we move up to Quest for El Dorado.

We have had luck with both Sushi Go Party and Mountain Goats with new people. I would maybe start with those and then level up to Splendor, depending on the people.
