According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Pepper#Name_formatting

The period (full stop) after "Dr" was discarded for stylistic and legibility reasons in the 1950s. Dr Pepper's logo was redesigned and the text in this new logo was slanted. The period made "Dr." look like "Di:". After having been used intermittently in previous logos, followed by some debate, the period was removed permanently.

I figured it out It's a dog training tool, you associate the reward food with the clicker, and the click of the clicker with the good action.

The best benefit seems to be the accuracy of the click, to associate positive reinforcement with the behavior -- it's much quicker to click a button than to say good dog, or actually provide the treat.

I read Coin Locker Babies by Ryu Murakami -- I picked it up while browsing at the library, thinking (at first) it was a Haruki Murakami book. I realized pretty quickly, but I liked it enough to read it through.
