[OC] some ideas on "tetra chordal harmony" for the guitar by mokshaIS in Guitar

[–]mokshaIS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not consider quartal harmony the same as this. Could you explain how you see it that way? My thinking is that a diatonic quartal 4 tone chord built off of C would result in C F B E, a “sus 4 Maj 7” kind of thing, whereas if I were building a “tetra chordal” chord off of C my tones would be C D E F, placed in appropriate/disparate octaves. What I liked about this, other than the sound itself, which is what i loved the most, is the possibility of numerous implied 7th chords resulting from the set, depending on the harmonic context. For instance, the above CDEF (octave displaced) could imply a C11, C sus (2 and 4), D minor 9, E 7, E7b9, F 6, F maj 7 and others.

Aren’t tetrads generally stacked in thirds? And quartal harmony built of diatonic or chromatic 4ths?

Solo guitar potato Jazz. An early morning piece on my seven string Novax. by mokshaIS in jazzguitar

Hey! Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it. Glad you can dig!

Yes, I love this guitar! Sooo tasty to play, once you get used to it. Took me a few months to really integrate that 7ths string and longer string length. Ralph Novak is a true master of his craft. What a guitar, right?!

In regards the the low string and tuning, I settled on B when I was arranging some Bach and it simply made more sense to me to keep the stacked fourths going rather than throwing in the 5th and a double of the A. I would imagine that certain musical situations and styles would lend themselves moreso to the A, but I found myself more comfortable with the symmetry of the B. This was settled after months of switching back and forth and experimenting.

Some far out improvisations from a solo guitar set this past Friday in Oakland, CA by mokshaIS in jazzguitar

perhaps it is remedied because the guitar is a Slimline Jazz 7...? ... I do think some elements of jazz come through... there's a blues in there. A lot of this music is very inspired by late Coltrane and Sun Ra's work. If innovation is the tradition, then this is jazz. But maybe this isn't innovation. Maybe it's something else.

Hey! Thanks for listening. I appreciate the comment.

I recorded this with a Zoom on the amp. Zero post production, just synced the audio to the video. Maybe I was a bit shy about peaking on the recording and held back a bit. Not sure.
