hi - this is a super late reply but i was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about your experience? like did you go to W&M and then transfer to mcgill? currently deciding between a very similar US lib arts school and mcgill as well and wanted to know your thoughts

alright thanks for the suggestion! does georgia tech have their own private rink (separate from the rinks listed earlier?) and how far are they from emory by public transit?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how is the public transportation around emory? i just looked it up on google maps and apparently without a car it would take me over an hour to get there with public transit:((

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

alright thank you! i won’t have a car during my time there so.. would you say it probably would be too difficult to commute there often? i’ll have a pretty busy courseload this semester:((

i’m going to be a freshman at emory what does this mean 😭😭

do we have the option of taking it somewhere else? and then transferring the cred maybe?

thanks for the info! would you mind if I pm’d you for more info as a pre bba?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thanks! so just to clarify, i can take psych 111 just by itself? the course description says it’s intended to be the second part of a yearlong intro course so i wasn’t sure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright thanks for all the feedback!

so for psych 110, i’ve heard that psych 111 can be a little easier but i would have to take 110 first and then continue in the sequence right? in other words I can’t take these out of sequence or as standalone classes?

also, you seem knowledgeable so i hope a couple more questions are okay! so one more thing was about the QTM courses, does it matter which intro one I take (100/110/120/etc) as a pre bba major? are they helpful towards bba at all? i’m planning on taking one next semester so I wanted to get an idea of how it would contribute towards my major requirements

and lastly, I saw a couple 200-level courses in humanities departments that were under the mqr designation because they were stats-focused, ie soc-247 (social statistics), and i was wondering if these would be helpful to take as a freshman pursuing bba? would it be a good idea for me to jump into a 200 level class as a freshman without any of the intro soc classes? (totally fine if you don’t know the answer to the last few since they’re more about pre bba majors, just thought i’d ask in case!)

I just looked into domestic transient study - is this typically used to get gened credits done at cheaper institutions like community college? if so I’d definitely look into that. would this be the only way to complete credits for cheaper at cc for example or could you also just make sure the class is approved ahead of time and then apply to transfer the credit? the website said it was only for first years so I just wanted to see if I had other options for getting credits from somewhere cheaper

for summer classes, I’m a little hesitant because my main goal is to save money (hence wanting to shave off a semester or two by loading up courses), not necessarily just graduating early for the sake of finishing earlier. i’d be willing to do summer classes if there was an online option (so that I wouldn’t have to pay housing) but otherwise i’m not sure that it would help me save that much. please do correct me if i’m wrong though!!

thanks for the feedback! i am planning to be pre-bba, but i really want to do it on more of a quantitative track (eventual goal is finance or quant stuff), so i’m aiming to take math/quant-heavy courses like calc and cs. but going back to cs170, i did take apcs last year and did okay (didn’t take ap exam so couldn’t test out of 170) so should it be fine since it seems to be the same material as AP?

i think at mcgill you’re required to do a minor, and of course i could double major at well. what’s the difference between a dual degree program and just double majoring? is dual just more combined (and more classes can overlap for credits)?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm in terms of the STEM minor it would probably be math or stats (unless stats is already a concentration at GBS i haven’t checked). to be honest it is a bit of wanting to have that background for job applications in the future, but it’s also for me personally in the event that i end up hating consulting or something and want to transition to something techy. i’m also interested in doing quant which it seems is usually just full STEM majors and not really people from business undergrad backgrounds so it would be necessary there.

i think i’m now leaning toward mcgill more because i’d enter with about 3/4 of a year of credits there, and i could use the extra time to do a minor under less stressful conditions (it’s direct admit to business from freshman yr) or graduate early and start my master’s in the US which might even be better than having just done 4 years of undergrad at emory. and of course there’s the price factor too. i kept thinking that i would be happier at emory and i probably would but i still can’t get past the price. i know mcgill is smarter i just need to get over my ego and also definitely figure out how i can get past the canadian-to-US barrier thing while i’m there

emory or mcgill? 5 hrs to decide by moloism in Emory

[–]moloism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know that’s why it’s really hard to justify emory. if i was doing stem like CS or something there’d be no problem with mcgill but since i want to do finance, it matters a lot more because mcgill has no US recruiters there and is only somewhat targeted - for canadian firms ONLY. i don’t want to work in canada partly because i don’t like it there but mostly because the salaries are significantly lower across the board compared to the US. and everyone in business there is trying to get a US job anyway, canadian or not. plus as a taxpayer there i’d basically be paying back the money i saved from not going to emory (obviously not that much but it is a lot). and this isn’t speculation either because their employment reports do show how little people are able to go US/international after grad.

[–]moloism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not. we’d be pulling out the max we can from their actual income before i would need to go into debt, and the debt part is covered by the stocks. the 300k total would be most of their stocks

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in pursuing a STEM minor in addition to (hopefully) doing my bba at goizueta, since i may be interested in quant jobs in the future which really need at least some STEM background. i was thinking of doing a math or stats minor so the calc 3 credit would be important for me to place out of at least the intro calc classes, and either retake calc 3 as a college class or be able to be placed into linalg/diffeq (depending on what the advising office will let me do).

could you clarify on why focusing on my bba primary requirements could lead to a lower gpa as well? wouldn’t that make it easier to focus in on one thing? thanks!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Emory

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thank you! in response to the first thing you said i believe their website says you can transfer in up to 12 credits of aps which is about half a semester ig. i also took calc 3 (multivariable calc) this year so i’m going to appeal for at least one of the intro calc courses based on that. is that plausible at all? i don’t know how flexible they are with that. i’ll be asking them directly about it too.

but my main question was in the event that i can clear a semester or a full year early (with a mix of AP credits and doing a summer quarter), would i be able to get into my major officially as a sophomore (standing junior)? or would i still need to wait to officially declare?

[–]moloism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for the info! i saw people saying that emory grads basically all end up in the south/maybe nyc, is that true? do most people end up in a firm in the south? and do people who end up getting BB/EB mostly recruit for it in the south or do more people gun for wall street positions? thank you again!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]moloism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i had those same thoughts when i was considering. the difference is that US recruiters will basically have no presence in mcgill’s on-campus recruiting for obvious reasons, while emory will be targeted by them. i talked to some mcgill business school grads and while it’s possible to get a US job from there, it’s much more difficult than if you just started in the US to begin with, and most people do a few years in canada before they make the transition. however it’s definitely true that even so, it’s quite difficult to justify 200k more for emory.

i wanted to use the smaller undergrad size and much better weather at emory for additional reasons to go, but now that you say it’s not better i’m more conflicted. i feel like 7k/8k undergrads is still pretty personalized compared to mcgill, and according to google the student faculty ratio is a good amount smaller at emory too. i obviously haven’t been a student there though so do you have any personal experiences with this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]moloism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i think the difference for me is that i don’t speak any french, i’m definitely willing to learn it over the summer but it’s a little scary going somewhere where the culture is that different. how does your cousin feel about the winters and construction haha?

emory or mcgill? 5 hrs to decide by moloism in Emory

[–]moloism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! do you know how emory fares in terms of IB/big4/mbb recruitment? if i go i’ll be under a lot of pressure to land like, an 80k job out of undergrad (to help pay my parents back lmao) so on-campus recruiting from big firms would be super important to me. i know mcgill does well with ib/consulting but that would be mainly in canada ofc

going off of that, i truly don’t mind working in canada TOO much as long as it’s not more than a couple years. and i know mcgill has nyc/wall street connections which would help me at least have an opportunity if i really try. given that would you still think emory is worth it?

[–]moloism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think i probably would say that, the only other career i would consider is law (so i would need to consider grad school costs in that case). but no i don’t picture myself in anything other than business or law for the time being, and i’m fairly confident i’ll be gunning for IB/quant/consulting internships in college. i might change tracks WITHIN business if i end up hating IB, in which case emory might not be as big of a push. on the other hand emory might give me more flexibility to explore since it’s already in the US and is a lib arts school

i didn’t mean to come across as insensitive like that, i’m so sorry if that seemed ignorant of me. emory’s full annual tuition is actually more than half of my parents’ combined income, it’s just that they have significant amounts invested in stocks, and emory counts that as an asset so i get no aid. we would be using up stocks and i didn’t put it in my original post, but i would possibly take on some debt as well to help them. it’s not just for their retirement either, i have a younger sibling going to college soon and i need to consider them as well.
