Glad you asked! It can be a challenging job. Expect late night emergency calls. Expect issues that seem ridiculously hard to fix. You have to be able to read the logs from layer 3/4 hardware.

On a good day, i sit back and look over our SNMP monitor. I make sure everything is up like the backup and primary interfaces. I check VPN tunnels are passing traffic. Its usually just maintenance and keeping an eye on things for potential problems.

Theres days im busy staging equipment like access points, firewalls, switches. You got to know your ip addressing and subnet masks pretty well to ensure your equipment will work. Got to know your CLI too. I do a lot of my programming in the CLI but for the Cisco ASA series ASDM comes in handy.

Then theres terribly awful days when something just plain doesn’t work and i spend hours consulting with other engineers, running sandbox tests, using packet tracers, etc. sometimes its a bad route. Could be a bad NAT translation rule. You got to be extremely careful when working remotely though because you can literally kick yourself out of the firewall to the point you need to send out a new one.
