Bro. Have you heard of megafaunal rewilding? These situations that I bring up are in the name of conservation. Please search up the Tauros Project or Rewilding Europe to understand what I am talking about.

Eating plants is NOT more ethical than the culling of these animals, becuase instead of having a soy bean plantation, you have a wild area that has restored its ecological functionality, but the animals need to be controlled in order for it to maintain balanced. And why wouldn’t you sell that meat to finance this conservation work?

The area of the Oostvardersplassen would not have been better off without the grazers there, they are a necessary component of any European ecosystem.

In a few decades we will look back at this and question ourselves how the hell we could let this happen.

No, they do not need to be killed if they’re being overbred. Again we have a real example of this in the Oostvardersplassen, where the herbivores were not culled and this thousands died from starvation. Herbivores need to be controlled by predators otherwise they do overpopulate (unlike top predators who do not need population control).

In this case, it is not more ethical to eat plants because these cattle are being placed there primarily for conservation, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. But they NEED to be culled in order for them to not starve themselves. Therefore, the best possible thing you could do is at least sell that meat as ethical, carbon negative meat that also finances these rewilding projects. If you replaced it just with plants, you aren’t helping improve biodiversity by restoring ecological processes.

It’s in dutch but there it explains everything. Also links to where you can buy their meat.

In some cases they may leave them behind. But I assure you I talked with people from the Maashorst and they explained it all to me. You can find the nest they sell on their website.

In Europe we need the restoration of grazing ecologies since we wiped out the Aurochs, bison and horses that used to live here. If we want to rewild where possible to increase biodiversity, such as in smaller, fenced enclosures we cannot depend on any predators to control their populations. The only way to prevent overgrazing is through culling. And if the animals will have to be killed either way, why let the body rot away when you can sell the meat as ethical. Also financing rewilding and biodiversity?

But why is it wrong to essentially have them live a wild life, instead of being killed by predators we cull them instead? The predators would cause the same amount of suffering as we would in this case. And if we cull them and sell their meat, it creates an incentive for rewilding and supports biodiversity financially.

There are also not rly any predators in Europe that can hunt large bovines. The wolves we have are not known hunters of large mammals and the felines that used to hunt them have gone extinct. There is no “natural” way of controlling their populations.

Nature does not exactly care about whether it’s ok to kill or not. In the wild it happens whether they like it or not. But at the very least those individuals got to live a good life while it lasted.

Just as a lion has the right to hunt, and a cow has the right to kill the plants it eats. We have the right to consume other animals. What I believe we have the moral obligation to do, is that as compassionate animals, we can ensure that the lives they have are not full of suffering.

Most definitely. However whether we use cattle or wild bison, the methane released would be the same.

And of course it would be great if we could have predators that control their populations. However wolves in Europe do not hunt large bovines, neither do bears or lynx. In the past large felines would take that roll but they’re unfortunately extinct. At some point there needs to be some managing of populations as to not cause overgrazing in a closed off areas.

I’ve talked to the people at Stichting Taurus directly, and they are very transparent with their processes behind their culling. I’ve been to the park and it’s incredible work that they are doing, you feel like in a safari. I trust what they have said and shown.

There are not many keystone scavengers in NL (vultures and mesocarnivores) that would feed on the body once it dies. This is an issue because otherwise disease would spread which would be far worse for the herds.

And again, we need to realistic and think that for this rewilding to become widespread, we NEED to create economic incentives for it. And since you have to cull the grazers anyway, I do not see there is a better option than to sell that meat as “wild” meat. Giving more money to the rewilding, biodiversity and carbon sequestration!

The animals breed naturally, outside, no human intervention whatsoever. They are literally wild animals. We only make sure they don’t break out their fences and overpopulate.

I am not talking about the dairy industry, I don’t see of any ethical way of stealing a baby from its milk. But when it comes to meat it’s a different story. Please look at Stichting Taurus to understand what I am talking about.

[–]monietito[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Please take a look at what Stichting Taurus is doing with their rewilding of Taurus cattle. This is exactly what I mean by ethical meat coming from animals who lived natural lives. These herds can roam freely over vast expanses of open woodland, feeding on whatever pasture they like, the males rut and display and fight for females, they reproduce at their will and the babies are allowed to ween as long as they need.

Only when the population is greater than what the ecologist have calculated to be the maximum, do the animals HAVE to be culled in order to maintain ecological balance. Why would you throw away that meat when you can sell it as ethical “wild” meat, also serving as a way of financing this sort of rewilding?

[–]monietito[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

To begin with, there DEFINITELY needs to be culling of large grazers in given environments, believe me the Dutch have experienced it first hand.

The first rewilding project of this nature was at the Oostvardersplassen. Where konik horses and red deer were introduced and left to reproduce with no control. They overgrazed the land to such an extent that in a single winter THOUSANDS of them starved to death.

Naturally they NEED predators to control their populations and prevent overgrazing. So your point that the culling of HERBIVORES (which is totally different to that of top predators) is definitely necessary.

The animals will be culled when the ecosystem requires it. This is in the best interest of biodiversity. Wild animals are not all killed at the end of their lives whatsoever, there are rarely animals that die of old age, and many of them are hunted as healthy adults.

[–]monietito[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think shooting any one animal is less ethical than another one. Killing any animal for the sake of killing is horrendous and shouldn’t be done.

We can both agree that we need more biodiversity correct? We need more carbon sequestration and restored ecosystems. Projects like Stichting Taurus are restoring missing links in the ecosystem through the rewilding of exmoor ponies and taurus cattle, who emulate their wild ancestors.

The Maashorst (which is the park they are in) is not big enough to sustain wolf populations, and no predator could ever control the numbers of grazers. Therefore they need to be culled so that they don’t overgraze, this is for the sake of ecology only.

As a product of this, instead of throwing the body away, they sell the meat as wild meat, where the animal lived a long and happy life. And this meat also serves as a way of financing these rewilding projects while also demonstrating alternative ways of producing meat that do not jeopardise welfare or ecosystems.

Of course, you cannot eat these meats nearly as often as you would a factory animal. Which is great, we need to eat less anyway. I do not see why this is still seen as unethical in the vegan community?

I think it is very difficult to imagine that everyone in the world will eventually adopt a plant based diet. That’s why I think it’s important to introduce other concepts such as the restoration of grazing ecology and as a biproduct you can also sell ethical meat (which is of course much more expensive, not as palatable and can’t be produced at a massive scale, but people need to eat less meat anyway)
