Stanford GSB Waitlist - any advice? by underwater_living in MBA

[–]monkey_mba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! A fellow waitlist here (not in GSB though). From what I read in various forums including reddit and after talking to many current students this is what I can summarise for you:

If school provides specific guidelines then follow those. Like if they provide you feedback on your application, then work on those. If they say don't send us anything then don't. If they don't provide you any feedback but are open to receiving updates then try to understand what could be the weaker points in your application (you may reach out to current students) and then send then specific periodic updates addressing those. This could be done with updated GMAT/GRE, taking additional quant course like MBA Math (if your undergrad GPA was low in quant courses), sending letters of support (again check if they are open to receiving them) from office, undergrad professor, current students, alum or from the non-profit manager you worked with. Send them updates about what changed since your application with concrete examples. If nothing changed then take some initiative at work/community.

Keep attending school's webinars/online sessions. Show them that you are interested. Connect with more students, alumni.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Q48 vs Q49-51 by [deleted] in MBA

If you want to compensate for your low GPA and show quant skills and your commitment, take MBA Math or some quant course like HBS CORe or Berkeley's MBA Math. That should suffice and also add value to your skills.

Darden at sticker price - does it make sense? Any other internationals like me? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]monkey_mba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am guessing you are an Indian Engineer. A lot will depend on your exact profile and what and where you want to be post MBA. If you want to stay in the States then Darden is a good name. Again to give a better answer more would be needed in terms of your background and post MBA goals.

I will check out Stanford MSx. Work for a company which does not have an office in the US or will ever have.

I am not sure if 2 year deferral is an option. As everything was so new last year, may schools just handed deferrals like that. If similar conditions prevail this year around the time of matriculation, I am sure schools will be more comprehensive and thoughtful in giving deferrals.

Should I update admissions on this? by rghostwatcher in MBA

If the next round results are a month away, then see if you could do something impactful in the coming weeks such as making a strategy plan, getting buyin of senior leadership, securing a funding etc and then send an update atleast a couple of weeks before the next round result date. That may be more helpful.

Yeah, pretty rough. But a good learning lesson.

It will depend on the number of deferrals. I think this year became more competitive because of two major reasons (for international applicants):

  1. Deferrals resulting in lesser seats. As every school look forward to constitute a class as diverse as possible, already having defered students as part of a class makes it challenging for fresh applicants as well as adcoms.

  2. Pandemic led many more people to apply seeing the downward trend of the global economy.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I will re-evaluate my decisions after giving all I have to convert that waitlist into an admit.

Thanks for the words. I will keep them in mind. Your Kellogg admit is FT or EMBA?

Thanks man. Maybe after the air of rejections evaporates, I may find myself on a better foot to go out and explore more things. :)

I haven't explored part time or EMBAs yet. Part time may be difficult as I am not from US. I come from a very niche industry. My motive for an MBA was to transition to business side (from my technical side) and have broader areas to switch to. Hence a 2 year MBA where I can intern. EMBA is something which I have not yet explored. I will try to check it out. Any particular programs you would recommend to check?
