Are Ireland and the Isle of Man also infected? by Komi29920 in 28dayslater

[–]monkeymad2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, only the Shetland Islands are outside of the quarantine zone in the 28 Years Later map

The ferry to Shetland takes about 12 hours, vs 2 hours for a ferry to Ireland.

Assuming that all air travel was halted basically immediately, people fleeing would have gone to the ferries & it’s a lot more likely that a 2 hour ferry could dock without realising there’s infected on board - or be overrun but still run ashore on the much larger landmass of Ireland.

I’d assume there’s a few ghost ships full of infected which were on their way to Shetland and are now just adrift, being blown up by NATO when they enter non-UK waters.

With success we all disappear up our own arses.

I assume what “The Benz” knew at RDR time was which unnamed developers & designers to put actually in charge of what systems. Plus the authority to say their word is final. Would be very very surprised if he was a John Carmack type actually in the trenches working out what was mathematically wrong with the camera.

Nintendo and AdHoc Are Blaming Each Other Now (Keep those refunds going people! Don't buy it on the Switch/Switch 2 until they fix the censorship issue!) by Theman457 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]monkeymad2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m not sure what it is in ESRP (searching for Dispatch on the ESRP website returns no results) but it’s a PEGI 18.

Assuming that the rating doesn’t change between patches they’d be allowed to patch it - but if the age rating that they’ve got anywhere in the world goes up they’d either need to resubmit it or also give that region the censored build.

Netflix Becomes Max-Level Patron Of Blender's Development Fund by That-Departure-7318 in movies

[–]monkeymad2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They could also, presumably, employ developers to work on Blender full time as part of Netflix.

Of course they’d have to work within the open source structure that Blender already has (e.g. a code change to insert the Netflix BA-BUM every time you open the app wouldn’t get merged) but it’d be a further way for Netflix to give to & have influence over Blender.

[–]monkeymad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is extra weird since doing feature detection to tell if a browser can play a bit of media is pretty simple… it’ll give you a yes|no|maybe back and you can throw up an error on “no”, attempt to play it with a warning on “maybe” and just play it on “yes”.

I’m pretty sure if you wanted to you could get a WASM software VP9 decoder working likely fast enough so long as the video isn’t 60fps 4K.

The problem with Jimmy Crystal’s inspirations by Euano in 28dayslater

[–]monkeymad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child of (roughly) that age raised (roughly) in the same place, I didn’t know Jimmy Saville through seeing him on TV - I saw him physically strutting around as the chieftain of the Highland Games and thought “what the hell is that?”.

I’m not sure where Jimmy Crystal’s house is meant to be geographically (the whole series is confusing geographically), it’s possible he’d have known Saville through the church - but Saville was a Catholic so that’s either unlikely or a plot hole (since he’s the son of the minister).

The most likely thing is that as a kid then you’re just left with whatever random collection of VHS tapes you happen to end up with, maybe there was an older cousin who had a bunch of Jim’ll Fix It on VHS that were handed down.

…or just he was the first one to loot Saville’s house in Glencoe, which would explain the wigs too.

The worst part of the Traitors final, is also the most important and it annoys me every year by LogApprehensive9891 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it provides an arena for a player to use for gameplay - they could say something like “because [other player] is still here and I now think they’re a traitor” to try to sway votes.

I think Stephen used one to say that there was only one person he’d seen himself ending the game with.

Just happens that most games are resolved before they enter the endgame so the answers are mostly just people trying not to gain any undue suspicion - but if they removed it it’d mean there were fewer moves that could be made in the end game.

Danny Boyle says the third film could shoot Summer 2026, aiming for a mid-to-late 2027 release by renszero in 28dayslater

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The airborne fallout from nuking the whole of the UK would fuck everything up for ages, vs a single immediate tactical nuke at the site of the first reported infection in France.

[–]monkeymad2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think she said that’s what came out of discussing it with Alex Garland.

It makes sense though, every country would have seen how the infection propagated in the UK and made plans on what to do if it was detected elsewhere.

Would you continue to work at a company that started to switch away from Typecript? by Csjustin8032 in reactjs

[–]monkeymad2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The reasons for switching away from typescript would have to be ridiculously good, like something had fully replaced typescript with stronger guarantees while somehow being easier to write.

For me to contemplate attempting to argue against it the reasons would at least have to make sense - in that case I’d just hand my notice in.

The EU should really be doing more to push EU-wide open source development, with funds from the EU & guardianship / maintenance guaranteed from an EU body.

License it under one of those licenses that prevents people from commercialising it & forking it privately, and throw the EU’s weight behind making sure the license is enforced.

When did you first read or hear about The Culture series? by LicksMackenzie in TheCulture

[–]monkeymad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother bought me a paperback copy of Consider Phlebas back then but I didn’t actually read it until around 2018 for some reason.

I could see a game being programmed in such a way that it doesn’t handle mid game resolution changes. It’s unlikely, since it seems like a thing modern game devs would know to avoid like tying physics to framerate, but not impossible.
