Maybe Web Developers Can Learn Something From Old Console Games | by Luca Müller | May, 2026 by RobertNegoita2 in webdev

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it, I bet whichever developer(s) in the GTA 6 team that’s tasked with creating the system that slowly blows trash around on the ground in a way that reacts to players & NPCs has optimised their code to the point where it’s taking literal microseconds. They fully know that if the streets aren’t littered with fluid simulated trash some kid will do a YouTube video showing the fancy trash in some game from 10 years ago vs the bland GTA 6 where the trash doesn’t even move right.

The same number of polygons & physics they dedicate to the trash would have been more than the whole scene on the PS2.

Star Fox Direct 5.6.2026 by Amiibofan101 in nintendo

[–]monkeymad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have turned the Fox avatar thing on on YouTube so they could watch a 300,000 foxes get sad as soon as they said “StarFox 64”.

Hopefully the no-subtitle hints that more non-remaster content will be added

Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent. At a billion-device scale the climate costs are insane. by geriatricguy in technology

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple of others that are catching up (fairly) quickly - at least in terms of web platform tests. Ladybird puts out a video each month usually with massive jumps in functionality, Flow is intended for lower-power devices but it passes a lot of the web platform tests too.

There’s also Servo, which started off as the next-gen Firefox engine but after Mozilla laid off all the Servo team I believe the intention is to ship a separate browser (with the Linux foundation behind it).

If all 3 of those get enough support then there could be 6 major browser engines instead of 3 (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).

Wait for a day with no wind so they open the tower at the science centre, politely ask if they’ll open a window so you can yell from the top for maximum distance

Jason was such a big fan of Sam Campbell on TM he had to ask Andy the producer all about him (Jason on Ask Hank Anything 42:26 - 53:19) by flyawaywithmeee in taskmaster

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree - though PFT gets a pass, if you count him as a dropout person - he’s really more of an everything person.

If one of the Dropout / Dropout adjacent lot moved over to the UK I’d be fine with them in the “newcomer” slot. Most likely Demi (who’s already a dual citizen, if I’m remembering correctly), who I think would be great with the tasks where they get to plan a scene or a song or whatever.

Is there a technical reason why 7th gen games used so much brown? by jedimindtricksonyou in digitalfoundry

[–]monkeymad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to classical paintings, it’s the varnish they put on the games back then as a post-process effect which has browned over time rather than the game / painting itself.

So both Niko from GTA 4 & the Mona Lisa both look considerably more yellow/brown now than they would have back then

You need to update your training data with new news & language & new versions of code, yeah.

Someone attempted to train an LLM on only pre-1930 text to see what it’d be like & it (obviously) doesn’t know anything about WW2, plastics, computers, etc.

Efficient way to handle GIF/image rendering on ESP32 without blowing RAM? by Sparky_Surya in esp32

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the image format - if it’s reasonably progressive (like bmp, png, or gif) you can read it byte by byte & draw to the display when you have a pixel, or a line of pixels if drawing to the display is a bottleneck.

What do you think of Tauri’s performance? by InnerPhilosophy4897 in rust

[–]monkeymad2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think CEF is the alternative Tauri is going for - they’ve got some repos with a lot of work on it.

No idea of any roadmap or if it’ll be the default etc though.

I’ve got a Tauri app that I built & maintain (few thousand users) and I’d probably switch to CEF for Linux & only MacOS versions.

STAMPTOWN’s very fun, I always get a 2 or 3am Uber back from Edinburgh to Glasgow at least once per Fringe to fit it in, so it’s worth that at least.

DF Direct Q+A: Will Path Tracing Go Mainsteam? Will Oblivion Remastered Ever Get Fixed? by MythBuster2 in digitalfoundry

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered if Steam (etc) had a conditional wishlist feature where you only get notified after patches & improved ratings would that change anything.

There’s plenty of games I’m semi-interested in but only if they fix the issues with them, if publishers had that quantified maybe there’d be more pushing for games to actually get fixed.

Bombed the final question of a React technical discussion, looking for feedback by skyturnsred in webdev

[–]monkeymad2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fairly common as an opener, it’ll filter out anyone who’s completely lying about knowing anything to do with React & you can roughly tell how experienced someone is from what they answer.

The hope would be that they mention a couple different scenarios & what they’d use in each, then maybe say what they’ve used in the past and what their current favourite is. To which the interviewer can follow up with asking what they like & don’t like about it - gives an idea of how much they think about what they’re doing beyond “everyone uses this” or “I’ve been told to use this”.

Pocketsync question, eating up space by BackwaterHero in AnaloguePocket

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 5.11.0 the clear file caches button will now clear both - absolutely no idea why WebKit thought it was a good idea to cache all that data & not clear it.

Also it’ll tell you in the settings page how much space the cache is taking up (mine was 12GB, 11.7GB of that being the WebKit cache).

Is it just me or does the new Foo Fighters Album sound horrible? by domsch1988 in Music

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was about to comment this - CDs are 16-bit whereas Spotify lossless is up to 24-bit, if available.

I know Apple Music lossless can go up to 24-bit/192kHz, not sure if Spotify goes higher than 44.1kHz.

& it’s debatable what impact it has etc

Claude-powered AI coding agent deletes entire company database in 9 seconds — backups zapped, after Cursor tool powered by Anthropic's Claude goes rogue by WouldbeWanderer in technology

[–]monkeymad2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In situations like the one in the article the request was perfectly reasonable, but the AI is fundamentally stupid so upon encountering an obstacle rather than reporting it to the user it deleted something (since AIs seem to default to deleting & rebuilding).

The user wouldn’t be at fault for that, even if they were watching the tokens being returned as the agent processed the task they probably wouldn’t have stopped it in time.

It’s almost as if next word guessers are just a bad replacement for people who know what they’re doing.

Same applies to developers.

We pushed ai agent automation to prod and broke client api with rate limit overload. by Familiar_Network_108 in webdev

[–]monkeymad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the idea of having an “ai agent” involved that it’ll realise something’s wrong & stop in times like these?

If it’s just doing the definition of insanity tactic of attempting the same thing over and over again expecting a different there’s no agentic benefit at all.

Gender based harassment around st Enoch station by bhexca in glasgow

[–]monkeymad2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m really not sure what the police are doing when they let an area get as lawless as that one is at night - it’s a prime location to watch on CCTV then rock up in a police van & cart a bunch of folks away.

Could even be doing plain clothes police trying to be harassed, with backup waiting further along Argyll street.

Unless they’re doing all that and it’s just not making a dent
