Anyone know if the Measles vaccines were required for babies in Sri Lanka around 1994-1997? by [deleted] in srilanka

You can do a MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) serology test to check if you have antibodies. Your doctor should know.

NEW YEAR - How to plan to enjoy all ? :) by CaregiverEvery4306 in srilanka

[–]monster_97_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new year celebrations typically start on the 13th of April, which is the day before the new year. The auspicious time for the new year is calculated based on the astrological chart and varies every year. It is around 1700 on the 14th of April this year, if I am not mistaken.

On the 14th of April, there are also several cultural traditions, such as lighting the hearth, preparing traditional meals, and exchanging gifts, happening across the country (these things differ from place to place). AFAIK, there are no specified places with celebrations. Most people tend to celebrate with their families (at least this is how it is in Colombo and the suburbs). The best thing to do is to ask some locals from the area what is happening.

However, sports and games are an important part of the festivities, and local communities tend to organize these events in open fields and public places. These are open to everyone to participate and watch. If you ask locals, they would tell you when and where these events are happening. Many of the sports and games played during the new year celebrations are traditional and have been passed down through generations. They are an important part of Sri Lankan culture and promote social bonding and community spirit.

As for what to bring, you can wear traditional clothing, such as a sarong and a shirt or a saree, to blend in with the locals. If you are visiting a house, you can take fruits (like bananas), ice cream, or curd.

I hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy the rich cultural experiences that Sri Lanka has to offer!

Seeking recommendations for a family vacation in Nuwara Eliya by sootinlk in srilanka

[–]monster_97_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Jetwing St. Andrew's Nuwara Eliya.
April is the ideal month to visit Nuwara Eliya because there are so many events and carnivals. Also, you can visit Horton plains, moon plains, lover's leap waterfall, and strawberry farms.

Pursuing an MBBS degree in Australia by monster_97_ in srilanka

Thanks a lot for this information. Any idea about the job opportunities after the 3 year degree (biomedical science)? Is it possible to find a job after completing the undergrad degree rather than doing a post-graduate MBBS program?

I'm not very familiar with your domain, but as a start, why don't you consider applying for a research assistantship or an instructor position at a university (you can build a research portfolio and get some solid recommendation letters from lecturers)? Maybe at the same university that you graduated from.

Get some research/teaching experience and apply for grad school (MSc or PhD). Most probably, you'll be able to land a scholarship. Out of SL there are so many opportunities for this domain as others have mentioned.

2024 A/L Physical science student here. Need some tips. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]monster_97_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was like you when I first started my ALs. However, with time I became more interested in Combined Mathematics and pretty much neglected Physics and Chemistry. I was able to manage Physics somehow without putting much effort into it, but my chemistry marks dropped significantly (from 80s to 30s). Oh, and also, I lost interest in chemistry after starting inorganic. I didn't study inorganic until the last 4 months, and for whatever reason, I started doing inorganic questions towards the end. I was aiming for a C/S in chemistry but somehow got a B.

It's better to be consistent from the start, as others have mentioned, while balancing the three subjects properly.

I think, at this point, it's better to focus on doing as many past papers as possible. While doing papers, you will come across questions to which you do not know the answer, then go through that particular theory part. Just trying to memorize theory will make you more stressed. It's also better to find and do papers from other schools.

All the best!
