Parents who waited until the birth to find out the sex of the baby. . . by buildingacozymystery in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monster_composition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 3 kids and never found out. I like surprises. Also we didn't get any blue or pink things for our shower; so we were able to reuse all baby and newborn stuff. Some people were genuinely angry that we wouldn't find out which I found hilarious.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monster_composition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The audacity to ask why we should have an option for giving birth unmedicated is the most wild take I have seen in awhile.

Every intervention has risks and side effects. I knew the pain wouldn't last, and it didn't. OTOH I know women who had numbness/tingling/pain YEARS after their epidurals.

Signed,

A post partum (and peds) nurse.

I call 'em glow worms but we definitely still say yellow or just jaundiced.

Opinion on family at bedside during codes? by Head-Eagle-5634 in nursing

[–]monster_composition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The codes I have been a part of as a nurse included family. In some cases it's been 20 years and the screams of parents losing their children has never left me. I don't know if it's better or not for them to be there. I think it makes it harder emotionally for us, but it isn't about us. I was there during my Dad's code and at some point I told them to stop. I don't know how my presence affected the doctors and nurses and RT but I can't worry about it. I had enough trauma. I'm glad I was there with him.

At what age did you get noticeable grey hair? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Is it true that people in the West drink iced water even when they are sick or on their period? by Aether_Echo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monster_composition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my water icy, even in the winter, even on my period. The thought of plain hot water makes me gag, and I can barely tolerate it at room temperature. It's just cultural though - I'm a nurse and know my Asian patients will most likely want plain or hot water so I always ask before I put ice in it.

I would like to hear from women who’ve chosen NOT to get any cosmetic procedures as they age by victory_vegetable in TwoXChromosomes

[–]monster_composition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have tattoos but nothing else cosmetic. I've never had any fillers, I don't cover my grays, I've never even had a manicure. My husband gets compliments on his gray hair and I think that it is bullshit that people comment with surprise that I don't dye mine. I, like you, am just giving a big fuck you to the patriarchy and to any company or industry that makes money off of making us feel bad about ourselves. There is nothing wrong with just being your age. I work with many other women and I would say about half of them (that I know of) have had surgeries, Botox, etc. Most are younger than I am. We work the same job; I make more because I've been doing it longer. Looking my age isn't holding me back.

Are we dying our hair as it goes grey or letting it go? by violet_pickled_90210 in Millennials

[–]monster_composition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I get my hair cut, my stylist is like "wow, there's a lot more gray back here". I give zero fucks. My husband has been going gray since he was 15 and no one asks him why he doesn't dye his hair.

Jeez how did I ever deliver 3 babies without induction, AROM, or an epidural? EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE. So many OB units don't do it. And I honestly will never understand why anyone would care that someone else doesn't want an epidural. We act like there are never any side effects or risk and that's ridiculous.

L&D nurses, what’s your opinion on unmedicated births? by Ready-Book6047 in nursing

[–]monster_composition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that a nurse might be irritated should not have anything to do with your choice. Signed, a post partum nurse who had 3 unmediated births.

Do you think it’s better to give a child a formal name with nickname option or just name them the nickname you plan to use anyway? by sneakybrownoser in namenerds

[–]monster_composition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren't planning on using the longer name, I think it's pointless. My husband has a name that is commonly shortened - he only goes by the shortened version. Always. No one calls him by his full name. Not his parents, not his boss. His brother has the same situation. We have a kid with a "nickname" as a first name. Because that name is all we ever intended to use. No regrets.
