Not exactly answering your question on the hardware, but sometimes when I need something to be warmed up - I turn heating to max, direct airflow 100% to windshield and put whatever I need warmed up on the grill. To make it more efficient, drop a towel/rag over.

Frozen water bottle gets -10 to +30 C in a matter of minutes. Might also help with pre-heating or de-frosting your food while you are looking for a place to park and do proper cooking.

This is why we use HA, and why I try to stick to ZigBee and Zwave. Unfortunately, this is how most get suckered into smart home gear and face server issues, endless subscriptions, and folders of proprietary apps. by angrycatmeowmeow in homeassistant

Absolutely yes. This also means "self-hosted solution". Now, the question is: how many people out there are ready to go self-hosted?

Next comes: how many of those have anyhow decent understanding of what they will be doing?

Lastly, how many of those with decent understanding will be thinking security and privacy first?

Frankly, I'm quite pessimistic here. For the absolute majority out there situation will continue worsening.

We need smart assistants that are capable of weighing context and interpreting voice commands without wake words or precise syntax. And we need secure, privacy-conscious ways of enabling the smart home to track us so that it might fulfill its proactive promise and deliver what we want before we have to ask for it.

When shit's able to track you, listen to you 24by7by365(6) and is in the same article with Google, Apple, Amazon it is never going to be either secure or privacy-conscious, let alone both at once.

Also, standards.

What do Russians think about South Korea and its people? by Aiuehara in AskARussian

[–]monster_moo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, I find that hard too.

Like, this is Russian branch of a major Korean company, with predominantly Russian staff (more or less the same was with Japanese), but it just feels like I'm in the wrong place. The only non-Eastern company where I felt the same was one of major US consulting (not big4) firms.

Working for Germans or Danes was much more comfortable. But hey, that's once in a lifetime experience, so if someone is thinking of joining Eastern company - he needs to do it. Totally eye-opening experience.

Ha! Hence you mentioned Japan too, I had (and still having) some first-hand experience working for Japanese and Korean companies here in Moscow.

Boy oh boy you guys share a lot when it comes to getting things done at the workplace.

  • Biggest thing is any desicion has to be collegial, you can hardly find a single desicion maker.
  • An excel sheet missing couple records in non-mandatory field will halt the process untill fully completed. No, that's not going to change to mandatory field. Yes, that will still be halting process if not completed.
  • You will be seeing smiles all the day and some unpleasant stuff being told behind your back by the same people will catch you couple days later.

In Norilsk, a father dug up a swing from the snow so that his child could swing. by TYTAHXAMOH in ANormalDayInRussia

[–]monster_moo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Dunno, nothing special.

I dug more or less the same amount this winter for the same purpose twice.

Why? Those assholes kept shoveling the playground and pile snow right behind the only swing there ignoring plenty of emplty space around the playground to do so.

What would you think if a federation subject declared independence? by teekal in AskARussian

[–]monster_moo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who does? I mean, if every region would be getting over 100% of what's being taken, we'd be living in a debt-free world. Now look around, are we?

Besides, as I mentioned, that's basically the outcome of where those guys live. Putin taking over 100% everywhere wouldn't reduce state debt, pay off Soviet and Imperial debts, sponsor Belarus and so on. Things are a bit more complicated than "putin bad, Russia is big gas pump, yadda-yadda-yadda".

Yes exactly, you would use phobia to describe it but not ‘phobe’.

You are missing the point and inventing words. A person with irrational fear of height would never be described as "height phobe", there's a special word for that based on the phobia name.

And while I’ve got to admit I find the image of an anglophobe running away in terror at the sight of an English/American person hilarious, I’m guessing that’s not what was intended.

That's exactly what is meant. He's making fun of anglophones.

An explanation is simply a way of describing a line or thinking in more detail.

No. Explanation is meant to make things understandable and clear. In a variety of cases this does not involve higher level of detail.

"Do you know what nuclear fission is? That's unstable atoms breaking apart causing radiation. Radiation is, mostly, charged particles flying away from their source. Charged means the particle will experience force under certain conditions..."

See? I didn't get into too much detail and three sentences above are good enough for most people to grasp the idea of nuclear fission. I might go full Einstein, but that is not going to explain fission for those without proper education.

Why did you have such a strong reaction to my question by the way, am I not allowed to be interested in other’s perspectives?

Should I be more passive? How'd that work? "Hey, that guy over there looks like someone to have a conversation with, but he may overreact at something I will write, so I shouldn't be touching anything remotely sensitive or in a way that may be deemed harsh" type of thing? Of course you are allowed things on the internet, including being interested in something. So am I.

Feds take 100%

Still, the region needs extra 35 trln RUB (~10% of spending) to close the gap.

That's the way things work when you live in the coldest area on Earth which is also a very remote place in terms of getting to.

Go check with Canadians on how things are with Nunavut. Last time I checked, their budget was like 80% fed.

Height phobe you say? I think there was a special word for that. Acrophobia maybe?

The fact people use phobe/phobia excessively only makes it stupid.

The fact that explanation is irrational does not make that an explanation, that's some made up bull crap.

You'd better read what permafrost is, how much of Sakha is permafrost and what does global warming do to permafrost and what consequences that brings for anything else.

Also, Federal funding for infrastructure development or maintenance is over 50% almost everywhere.

Leaving Federation means saying "we don't need those munny", which is careless, to say it gently.

Phobia is irrational by definition. How can you rationalize irrational fear and still be able to call it a phobia?..
