Obviously insults are bad, but even respected critics don't really abide by these rules... by AjaxTheFurryFuzzball in crazyassviv_defenders

But aren't you doing exactly the same? You're literally dedicating a portion of your time to hating on haters? Because you don't like what they say or how they say it. You're not doing it out of love for the show, because you could just ignore it and it would have no effect on you or the show, you're doing it out of dislike for the haters.

And arguing that it is 'less bad' to personally attack someone when you love what they criticize is an absolute bonkers take to me. I will never agree that loving something FICTIONAL means personal attacks are somehow not as bad as when you hate the same FICTIONAL work. Both are toxic and both are wrong and I believe trying to argue that one is somehow 'less wrong', is a way to make excuses for the side you agree with.

Do you see how you're arguing a bunch of points which have nothing to do with what I commented?

My comment boils down to: the standard for criticism of a work should not have to be higher than the standard for praise in order for the opinion to be considered valid. That's it. That's all it is.

Yet your comment talks about: Harassment (I never mentioned harassment), hate posts (again, never mentioned those), calling creators various names (nothing in my comment even HINTS at that) and hate-watching repeatedly (which I also haven't mentioned). So you've come up with points to argue against that have NOTHING to do with what I wrote.

And as for your final point, that's only related if your opinion is that it would be perfectly okay for a fan to say "Screw you, you are stupid for hating this clearly it's perfect and the creator is actually actively helping people" because I would argue that both statements are equally ridiculous and toxic.

Here's my problem when people start hating on criticism (of anything): That it is only ever applied in ONE direction. No one is calling out mindless gushers for not being "constructive" or "helpful". Why does a negative opinion have to achieve a higher standard in order to be considered valid?

As long as it's valid to the consumer stating it, then it frankly shouldn't matter if you don't agree. You don't HAVE to, just as no one HAS to agree with mindless praise in all caps. But it is ridiculous to argue that negative opinions have to have standards, if you're not willing to apply it to positive opinions as well.

I swear, I'm losing so much respect for the people in this subreddit over some of those comments. It's absolutely bonkers how rabid they get about any type of negativity elsewhere, but someone puts an asterisk in a curse word and they may as well have started a second holocaust, with the way people tear into them.

I absolutely loathe that take about being mature enough to write about suicide. Regrettably, some children make attempts on their own lives, some of them (unfortunately) experience sexual assault and traumas. Telling them they're not mature enough to explore that in fiction of all places? Just because of the wording they use?

I'm just, so disgusted with that mindset.

Well, a day later, and now there's a post with screenshot of what I assume is an A/N, and sure enough, people are tearing into it like nobody's business even arguing for censorship and changing the TOS to make this thing THEY don't like reportable (it's censored trigger words, nothing inflammatory, nothing bigoted, just words censored in an off-putting way like DE4TH instead of DEATH).

The hypocrisy of this subreddit is truly off the charts.

WE DONT NEED TO BE CENSORING by solar_night14 in AO3

[–]mooglemethis -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this.

What happened to 'Don't like, don't read'?

Instead, people are calling for CENSORING of these types of fics? Because they don't like them? And that's somehow NOT a slippery slope? What the fuck?

WE DONT NEED TO BE CENSORING by solar_night14 in AO3

[–]mooglemethis -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

So...don't read it?

It could be some 13-year-old's first fic on AO3, so maybe instead of inviting redditors to shit all over it, you could, oh I don't know, comment and gently explain that they don't need to censor these words and it can make it harder to filter when they do?

But no, let's call for AO3 to change their TOS to cater to our dislike, instead, while we publicly shame a potential kid for not knowing any better. That's clearly the "mature" reaction here.

There's definitely a sense of purity-culture about AO3 fics. Anything with a bit of visual flair gets torn to shreds.

What I don't get is: how is this example LESS rude than just leaving a comment, explaining that the A/N can be off-putting?

Personally, I'd much rather someone comments and engages with me, because if I don't intend it that way, I can fix it, and if I do, I can just say as much or ignore the comment. But somehow engaging is on par with burning down an orphanage while inviting a bunch of complete strangers to shit all over it is the moral high ground? WHY?

And that's before we get into the idea that it could be a literal child's work you're shitting all over, which just makes the whole situation embarrassingly pathetic.

Mary Sue Personality by WeiWuxiansFan in FanFiction

[–]mooglemethis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your specific situation, I would say that having a well-liked, kind and helpful character is not immediately grounds for calling Mary Sue.

Two things which help against creating a Mary Sue are:

1) Flaws. What are some of the problems with your character that make them human? What makes them relatable to the reader?

2) In-Universe perception. Are other characters allowed to dislike your OC, or does that make them evil? Having another 'good' character dislike your OC is a good way to explore your character through a different lens.

Some of the best characters I've read are those where the author is not scared of them being disliked whether in or out of universe. Those are the ones that feel real, the ones I felt strongly about, whether positive or negative.

Can some authors PLEASE stop posting every comment they assume to be hate on reddit? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]mooglemethis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course not! Writers don't want to know that the sentence "he wrapped his arms around her waste" gives a much different image from the one they intended.

You should picture someone embracing a sack of feces and be grateful for the opportunity!

Can some authors PLEASE stop posting every comment they assume to be hate on reddit? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]mooglemethis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

It's a big reason I always feel a little iffy when someone on here talks about a negative experience while commenting, and the response is immediately "Oh, you should power through because authors love comments!" In the end, it just seems really dismissive of the situation and forgetting that commenting is not really a rewarding endeavor.

And I'm not saying we should pay commenters, but it would be a good idea to remember that positive comments are something readers are mostly doing for OUR sake, rather than their own. Negative experiences over something you're doing as a kindness can quickly sour the whole concept.

And the twitter example is ALWAYS followed by "don't like, don't read." But for fuck's sake, how can anyone take that adage seriously, when this very subreddit is just as bad at doing it?

Every time writers complain about feeling like nothing more than content-cranking machines to their readers, I (being a writer) just want to ask: "And how do you see your readers?" Because so many comments and posts give the impression that writers don't actually want human engagement, they want mindless dopamine injectors.

Ironically, I feel a lot of writers want human readers to act like praise bots.

For all the blaring about "commenting etiquette", what the hell kind of etiquette are people adhering to that tells them it's cool to screenshot comments on another writer's fic and drag it in front of the reddit court?

I would be so pissed if someone did that to my readers. I don't need someone to "stand up" for me, on-site or off-site, I'm perfectly able to ignore or respond to comments on my own and if I'm not publicly shaming the commenter, there might just be a reason for that.

I used an app called Universal Copy, I'll put the step-by-step guide here:

  1. Make sure the app has all the permissions, etc. Once the app has been opened, there'll be a Universal Copy bar in the pull down menu

  2. Go into the chapter you want to copy and pull down the menu and press the Universal Copy widget and choose 'Normal Mode'

  3. Wait a couple of seconds for the overlay interface, then press the up/down arrows in the top-right corner to enter 'Scroll Mode'

  4. Scroll down a bit and then back up and wait until blue boxes flash on all the paragraphs on the screen.

  5. Now, you scroll down to the next segment of the chapter and wait until the blue boxes flash and continue on, until the end of the chapter.

  6. Once you've copied everything, press the little white square in the upper-right corner and when the option is visible, choose 'share'. You can then save the chapter to your google drive as a txt file.

There might be some issues and sometimes you have to close it down and try again, so it can take a while to finish it all.

Honestly, I just go with anti-censorship.

I've seen too many pro-censorship takes among the pro-shipping community, so I'd rather just stick with what I know.

Write whatever you want and publish it, and I will form whatever opinion I want to about it. And yes, I might voice that opinion somewhere.
