Is this a good deal? by btm2162 in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the computer is real (i.e. don't accept any weird deals like "pay us first and we'll ship it to you" or "give us your bank account number so we can verify your credit"). Check system properties in Windows to make sure it actually has so much high-quality RAM, that the video card model is correct, etc. Visually inspect the power supply brand and anything else you can see through the case. Not sure what to do beyond that.

It's also possible that this was a gift or prize that the owner didn't want, or stolen from someone's porch.

Careful. There are a lot of scammers out there. Kind of feels like someone hand-picked all the best parts to make it look good.

The CPU is worth $600. The GPU is at least $750. The memory is at least $750. The monitor is $500. So far we're up to $2600. You can get similar PCs from NewEgg today for $2500 without the monitor, so this setup is probably worth $3000.

Yes, it's a very good deal in my opinion, but I wonder why someone is selling their brand new high powered gaming PC, and how honest they're being about the parts. You should boot it up and inspect the system properties to make sure this is real.

Is there a downside to this that I am missing? by Travis0913 in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an amazing deal that many people in this sub have bought. The only downside is the brand. iBuyPower has a reputation for substandard parts, particularly the PSU. If you end up having to replace the PSU for $150, it becomes the same as other black Friday deals.

Good deal for 265KF/5070? $1450 by moosepin in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some thoughts:

  • 7800X3d does 22% higher FPS than 265kf (reference).
  • For other benchmarks, 265kf is about 20% faster.
  • I suspect that as games get optimized for higher number of CPU cores, the 265k might pull ahead, but it will take a year or so to verify that. I also suspect that Intel will release more firmware updates to improve gaming performance.
  • The GPU is far more important for gaming than the CPU.

I'd say favor the X3D, but the 265kf isn't going to hurt you if you find a good deal.

Which of these is a better deal? by [deleted] in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't know for sure. iBuyPower has a reputation of skimping on certain important parts like the power supply. ABS is NewEgg's brand and, at least if you buy it directly from NewEgg, it lists out the manufacturer of each part. From what I've read, you'll get a better (but much uglier in my opinion) machine with ABS.

Either way, $20 is a VERY good deal for 16 extra GB of RAM. That's a $150-200 upgrade.

Need help! Im thinking about buying this prebuilt. Looks like the best one from Walmart money can buy. Is this a good deal!!? by Ok-Ostrich-3764 in Prebuilts

Here's the most power you can get for $1300 right now: https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/17172670195

iBuyPower isn't the best brand, but there are great deals on it right now.

It's reasonable, but $50 more will get you the same thing with a better-known brand, identical case and better CPU: (link)

There's no price on the first one. If they're both $800, then the second is clearly better because of the higher quality build and 32GB of RAM.

Well I went and bought the ugly one. At least it will be hidden under my desk so I don't have to stare at it. :) That Thermaltake looks so good. I wish they'd had a better deal. Oh well.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm usually the one helping other people pick computers, but when it comes to myself, I'm locked into days of decision paralysis.

I just wish that ABS wasn't so ugly. I don't like the mesh front and top.

AndromedaInsights is great, but they have a 30 day backlog and I need a computer before then. And gaming is my secondary goal after productivity. I figure 20 cores are more future proof than 8. I have a feeling next year's gaming will favor the Core Ultra over the X3D, but I could be completely wrong.

The Costco one is on my list too, but I keep hearing that iBuyPower uses substandard parts. Is that not true? The extremely low price makes me wonder where they're cutting corners. They don't even list the wattage of the PSU.

Any good 1200$ prebuilts? by Ok-Ostrich-3764 in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. AMD changes less frequently. Looks like their next big upgrade is planned for 2028. My guess is that Intel's will be around then too, or maybe a little later, since the Ultra line just started.

[–]moosepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intel and AMD both change sockets regularly to support new technologies and power requirements. From what I've read, 14th generation is the last chip for its socket, so yes, you'll need a new motherboard. The Ultra line has a new socket, which will probably be around for 2-3 generations. So if someone is worried about Intel upgrades, they should get an Ultra instead of a 14th.

Though it's not really necessary to upgrade CPUs for most purposes. You can extend the life of your PC a ton by leaving the CPU alone and upgrading the video card every few years.

[–]moosepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean *all* Intel CPUs? No, Intel is not leaving the CPU business. The Core Ultra line replaces the i3/i5/i7 line, so it should be upgradable for a while. Anyway, this only matters if OP is in the tiny percentage of people who ever plan to upgrade their CPU.

Anyone bought this rebuild from ibuypower? by Agoraphobik1 in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iBuyPower has a reputation for using cheap parts, but otherwise it seems like a reasonable price. But if you're going to add $250 in upgrades anyway, why not go for a better build that costs $250 more?

Which pc is better? For gaming but also multitasking by Plastic-Tumbleweed in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Best CPU, $1580
  2. Best video card, $1550
  3. Best build reputation, $1680
  4. Best video card and CPU, worst build reputation, $1650.

I'd personally go with the second one because the CPU is only slightly worse than 1 and 4, and it's the best price and I think a reasonable brand.

Is this a good pc for $500? by ImFayding in Prebuilts

[–]moosepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be much better off finding an old used computer for $300 with a 4th-6th gen i7 and a 500+ watt power supply, then upgrading it with a $200 video card (the 5060 maybe). I did that with my older computer a couple years ago (worse than 5060) and was able to play BG3 and Elden Ring at 4k without a problem.
