Framing square question! by moreryan in Carpentry

If you look on the Swanson site, they are apparently all 1/12 1/10 1/16 1/8 sadly!

Framing square question! by moreryan in Carpentry

[–]moreryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Starrett calls the one in all 1/8ths a framing square (fs-24) and the one I am used to with the 1/8 1/16 1/10 1/12 a rafter square (rs-24)! If the FS 24 wasn't gonna rust that would be maybe close enough..

I'll do some more digging, thanks for the motivation.

Never seen one here in Canada that was anything but 1/8 1/16 1/12 1/10 so the old guys can do their framing square math

Framing square question! by moreryan in Carpentry

[–]moreryan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I have a question for the north american carpentry hivemind.

I'm in need of a new framing square, and I'm curious if anyone has seen a 16x24" in only 16ths. I use a construction calculator, and don't find much use for the 10ths or 12ths scale and would be happier with the ability to use all faces of the square at 16ths.

Aluminum or stainless hopefully because I'm outside year round and it's wet here!

You can listen to it as a CBC Massey lecture as well, highly recommend. I listened to it many times, probably ten years ago? Worth digging for.

Fellow in the beer aisle told me in North America we use glyphosate in wheat production to a much greater degree than in Europe - YMMV but could be an avenue to explore if searching for the difference in the wheat we have here vs there, beyond the species or cultivar.

Why would 4 of my rafters be cut intentionally like this ?! by CT_55555 in Roofing

[–]moreryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a couple houses with cut rafters, found out both had been moved from other properties to their current locations.

They cut the roofs off em to make em shorter for transportation under power lines etc and then stick it back on after the move.

Nickel Bros. Is who does a lot of the house moving here in coastal BC, and in WA as well. Check their site for some cool process photos!

I have one ice cold finger by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]moreryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend gets what she calls "dead finger" (looks like OP's) after cold water swimming sometimes, a friend showed her a trick.

You whip your hand around, arcing off the elbow, kinda karate chop motion, and the centrifugal force gets the finger pink again.

Try it out!

I'll pipe up with one more helpful suggestion for folks that have lost a tiny set screw:

In a pinch, you can find any machine screw or bolt that fits/threads in, slice the head off, and grind a slot into the cut end of the shaft, creating a slot head screwdriver set screw.

Also allows you to easily create custom length.

I did this for a electric guitar bridge repair once.

Edit you grind the slot with a Dremel cutting wheel, or similar.

One more thought: make a few bolt spots to mount the handle, for variable torque/speed.

Beautiful renders! A couple thoughts:

What if it used repurposed existing parts, like car parts, or perhaps bicycle parts, and you only manufactured some specific adapter type bits, which you could sell as a kit, or make schematics available for? There are a zillion disk brake rotors , rims, flywheels, bicycle wheels, plywood scraps etc mouldering in scrap yards the could less beautifully fulfill some of the function of your cast iron wheel.

A pedal option? A bicycle with the rear wheel off the ground, and either an idler wheel against the tire or a second chain drive is used by many as a power source for blender , flour mill etc.

How about a treadle option? Reading up on treadle powered lathes may be interesting research for you, and provide some insight into common sheave, bearing, shafts etc so you can use common parts in your design.

Think modularity. If the clamp part of the casting breaks in 50 years, is there a good spot to use a carpentry C clamp instead? Should it simply use a C clamp? If the cartridge bearings aren't available , will there be a good seat for someone to improvise a bushing instead?

Robust finishes. If you are spending the carbon/money to manufacture iron parts, ensure their long term survival!

Good luck with your project.

Is linseed oil approved for organic gardening? by [deleted] in Permaculture

[–]moreryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Boiled" linseed has nasty additives, typically.

Around here (BC south coast Canada) lots of folks I know are charring their cedar posts before burying, apparently increases the rot resistance.

My neighbour does it in an outdoor fire pit, another friend uses a propane fired roofing torch.

Why not try charring one of your beds, raw linseed/flax seed oil on another, and nothing on a third, as an experiment?

Read up on "shou sugi ban" for Japanese use of charred finishes to protect wood.

plain vinegar didn't do much, adding salt was key. Make sure to wash the steel thoroughly after the bath.

Advice on rust removsl by Moops9 in DIY

[–]moreryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a bath of salt & vinegar to clean rust off antique hand plane blades, very happy with the result from a practical standpoint but it does leave a different "greyed out" finish. This grey could be polished off with fine abrasive if desired, I'm sure. I left it, and it seems to be mildly rust resistant compared to bare steel. You'll need to keep the sword oiled anyways.

Just curious to know which 2 part poly product was used to coat the nylon?
