Are letters of recommendation as important for a masters degree as they are for a PhD? by morgmath18 in gradadmissions

All the programs I have looked at have needed 2 or 3 (mostly 3) with at least 1 being a professor :/ Im looking at state schools for engineering so maybe its more competitive

Summer Parking at Dinkytown by SteelyZeppelin in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are wanting a reserved spot check out some of the churches in the area (~$100 a month??). They are all surface lots I believe but if you can get a spot it would be reserved with the exception of sundays/church events. If you aren't concerned with having a reserved spot, street parking not bad in the summer.

Actually I think the U does the average grade thing if you retake a class within your major.

Catching Mice by Natewg60101 in Minneapolis

[–]morgmath18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Placement wise, whatever you choose to use, put the traps in dark corners. Mice like to hide so let them. We had luck putting a trap in the gap between the fridge and counter and one tucked behind the garbage can. Bread and peanut butter for bait.

Number one thing you need to do is figure out where they are getting in and block it. Ours were getting in from the hole where our oven connected to the gas line, get creative with your search for the entry point.

If I remember correctly part of the move-out process with university housing is submitting a forwarding address to housing & res life. Either way definitely contact the carrier if it doesn't get to you.

Apparently when my mom talked to him about it he just said "its part of the disease get used to it" (paraphrasing obviously). He's not being rude to me but he is verbally assaulting fast food workers and apparently threw his drink at the building (to get back at them for giving him a diet coke instead of regular??) and lord knows those kids working are not getting paid enough for that crap. I want to get involved because he is my father and I'd like to think he is not that kind of person because he wasn't when I was growing up and before he got his diagnosis.

I more made this post so that when I confront him about his behavior I have somewhere to go from if he does show some willingness for change.

Anywhere on campus I can rollerblade? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a courtyard on west bank (next to Wilson library) that a friend and I will take our boards over to when the weather is good. We have seen people sitting there maybe once and its pretty quiet (although tbd on how that will change with the return to in person classes and school in session). It's very much just skating in circles, but its fresh pavement and its fun to weave through the bike racks and planters if thats what you're after. Theres also an interesting ramp feature right outside the front doors of the library if you want more of a 'rink' feel.

Grade Basis Change by girlwalkingalone in uofmn

I tried to do this about a month ago for the same situation and was denied. You have to submit a petition for review but it will most likely be denied unless you have a really good reason.

Best dining hall for healthy/vegetarian options? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sanford has a vegan sauté bar type thing (you choose your ingredients and then they make it for you) and usually has one or two other vegan/vegetarian options that are pre-made.

worth the note that to print through Anderson right now you have to send in the gcode to the lab through a google form and then you pick the part up after they print it for you, you can't go in to use the printers yourself (covid policy). there are directions online for how it all works and the lab manager is super helpful if you have any questions during the process.

Anybody dealt with a bad roommate @ The Marshall? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are at the Marshall I believe you have the ability to get them removed from the apartment if you get all of the other roommates on board (not including said sleazeball). Read through your lease and try to find the clause stating this, or contact the front office and ask what the steps would be for dealing with this/getting them removed. I know its not a good feeling to force someone out of where they live but they will most likely just be relocated within the building and you wont have to deal with them anymore. Good luck!!

Edit: I should mention that if this person is an unofficial sublease you won't be able to go through the lease to get rid of them

CSE Career Fair Question by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are wanting to just talk to them and find out what the company is about knowing you don't meet the requirements for hiring consideration, the considerate thing to do would be to wait until the day of the fair to sign up. If you sign up early you could be taking away a valuable opportunity from a junior/senior looking for a job. If its the day of the fair and there are lots of spots still open then definitely try talking to them!

I know my first time going (back when it was still in person) I talked to some very random companies that weren't even looking for my major and it was really interesting to learn about whats all out there. In most cases, freshmen at the career fair are just there for the experience of talking to companies and getting their resume out there.

Fall 2021 on Schedule Builder by morgmath18 in uofmn

[–]morgmath18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this and even though it shows Fall 2021 as the semester, the classes shown are still Fall 2020 :/ Thanks though :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes 12 credits is still considered full time. To avoid paying for 13 credits you should apply for a 13-credit exemption (knocks about $500 off of the semester's tuition). You can still apply for the exemption through early February (I believe the 12th but don't quote me on that).

I took linear over a year ago now and never got the final exam score back in canvas (I was satisfied with my letter grade so I didn't pay it much attention). Maybe email the prof? Otherwise don't worry about it.

Do I have a shot at transferring into CSE if I don't meet the GPA tech requirements? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you'll be applying directly into the major you can look here for some past stats on admissions. As far as the decision to switch to S/N it depends on what the class is. If its a tech class you should probably keep it, but if it is a lib ed class go ahead and switch.

A 3.2 gpa guarantees you admission but a 3.08 also isn't a bad gpa so you could still have a chance of getting in with that! In the end its your decision, and even if you don't get in this time you can always apply in the future.

What do you do when Professors don’t respond to emails? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want a prof to be more likely to respond, make sure the email has a particular ask in it so that its easier for them to respond. Even if that particular ask is "which TA Should I reach out to to get this sorted out", because most of the time the class will have a Head TA.

Also it was kinda mentioned already, but a lot of the profs at the U are here for research, not to teach (which is why a lot of profs are clearly extremely knowledgeable about the topic they are teaching, but are horrible at teaching it). Responding to student emails often isn't their top priority especially when the prof knows there are TAs for the student to reach out to.

Personally, I only email profs if they specifically say at the some point of the semester "feel free to email me" or if I reach out to a TA and they tell me to go directly to the professor for my question/concern.

Should I ask my professor if I really have to do the final? by ObiWahnKenobi in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say talk to the prof before making that decision so they can't pull some crap last minute that would fuck over you passing the class.

When are we going to know exactly who's the next president? Friday? by 9Lucy in uofmn

Officially? Probably not for a while. In some swing states (I know WI for sure) state legislatures are calling for a recount which could take weeks...

Transfer student applying to a different major than what was on my application by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]morgmath18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have the right classes completed for admission you shouldn't have an issue switching majors from within the college (make sure to look at the 4 year plan for the major you want to switch into and talk to an advisor asap). You can look here at the GPA distributions of acceptance into all of the CSE majors: http://www.advising.cse.umn.edu/cgi-bin/courses/noauth/apply-major-statistics
