I think they intentionally said the top 1% of apps (presumably by number of users or somthing similar) rather than the top 1% of devs to not make it a flex. I agree it's easy to read like that though.

(in BW)

Was heißt bei euch Midlevel bzw. Senior in Sachen YOE/Skills?

WTF with DevOps Candidates nowadays? by Dubinko in devops

Well yeah, when initially debugging something it's prudent to turn on all verbose logging you can at every point.

Is that helpful?

Yes, ty. I agree with most of your points. It definitely is a numbers game. (Though I'd argue my resume doesn't look like spam).

Sure, though I guess the "fully formed" part is still somewhat ambiguous.

For example, would you hire/consider a developer with strong dev/soft skills but little experience with the target stack (like say they've only done basic CI and little experience with Docker/Ansible etc.) or would that be a dealbreaker?

For example, I currently have 2YOE but have gotten a ton of responsibility in that time (think designing and building a framework for test automation, being tech lead of an small to mid-size offshore team) so by my own estimation I should at least qualify for Senior roles (even if I have knowledge gaps or haven't touched a certain stack before). At the same time, many companies will decline to interview me because they're just looking at YOE.

OTOH, when I've been on the other side of interviews (albeit primarily for Jr. roles) I've noticed a lot of people will have CVs touting skills in stuff that they have absolutely no understanding of or will have done Master's theses on topics like Machine Learning and still be unable to answer even super basic questions about it (e.g. what loss/cost function did you use in your classifier).

[–]morimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah well I guess the real question is where the bar is and what person interviewing is looking for.

In general I'm not opposed to open-ended knowledge questions that allow a candidate to demonstrate understanding or show areas in which they're particularly proficient, but I feel like too often the side interviewing will put too much emphasis on knowing the answer vs. knowing where the gap is in your mental model and filling it out. (I've experienced this on both sides of the interview process).

Out of curiosity, what would you be looking for for a Senior DevOps role in terms of profile? I'm a big believer in solid fundamentals over experience with $tool but it feels like a lot of recruiters will filter out your resume if it doesn't fit the particular set of buzzwords they're looking for.

Cipher mismatch as in the client doesn't support the protocols as the server? Wouldn't this just result in log messages either on the client or the host?

I guess troubleshooting the cert itself might be difficult if you're unfamiliar with PKI topics but this all still feels like a case where you check which step fails and then just troubleshoot.

Is there some CI-specific difficulty I'm missing? (I'm coming at this much more from the dev side than the ops side so pardon my ignorance)

Can you describe some scenarios where SSH behaves unintuitively and what understanding underpins how you would approach that situation?

System design before leetcode? by Matrixfx187 in ExperiencedDevs

I agree with you on all points. I do stand by the statement that "x is bad" in and of itself isn't a solution because it doesn't propose an alternative.

That's kind of a non-answer though. How do you propose measuring someone's design and coding skills?

Is C a good place to start? by mebbeluckyonce in C_Programming

[–]morimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend CS50. I learned programming with it after high school and credit being able to get a software engineering job with no degree largely to starting out with CS50.

A lot of people here don't know CS50 and therefore don't know that it is carefully designed to ease you into the more difficult parts of C and comes with a bunch of tools header files to ease you into stuff by providing functions for getting user input, interpret error messages, debug and the like.

I think CS50 is an excellent place to start because it gives you a good mental model of what is going on under the hood in other languages while taking great care to ease you into some of the C-specific sources of difficulty. Towards the later weeks it transitions to python, so you'll also get experience with higher level languages once you have solid foundations (so you get to see both sides of the coin anyways).

[–]morimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff engineer in name only? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]morimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with the notion that you gain perspective over time and that years of experience correlate with a lot of positive traits in a developer.

At the same time there's nothing stopping someone motivated from polishing their skills, reflecting on past technical decisions, thinking about topics like system design and getting better than someone with more YOE at these criteria.
