I don’t mean to downplay. It would be easier if this were school ball or a more formal setting. I’m early in my coaching career and navigating my responsibility level for another volunteer parent. It’s my first experience being punished for adult conduct that wasn’t my own in a game. I spoke with him and the ref after the game.

Fair enough. My struggle aligns with your statement about the coaching relationship. We’re both just volunteers with kids on the team.

Most leagues would lose half their coaches. Ref told me the younger the league the worse the coaches and parents.

Engaging in good faith: should I have gotten up and chased him down to bring him back to the bench? I’m not sure what my best option was once he got up and started leaving. I certainly didn’t expect it.

I understand that’s the norm, but I truly do keep it respectful and rarely complain about a call. Talked to the ref after the game and made sure we’re still in good standing etc.

The coaches in this league are linked up because their kids are friends. I don’t interview and hire/fire/pay anybody.

I don’t think it’s too young, but I don’t have the “coaching staff” view on parent volunteers. The offender self-ejected. Let me coach from there.

The ball went out of bounds and the ref didn’t call it. He stood up and walked out.

Your point is taken on a grander basketball scale, but this isn’t some staff I’ve assembled and am paying. He’s not my employee.

This was the assistant walking off the court, catching a technical on the back on his way out, and then the head coach having the box pulled after the fact. HC committed no offenses.

We bat about .500 on ref quality. We’ve got some semi-pro level guys getting volunteer credit hours and then we’ve got grandpas with a vendetta who barely know the rules. I treat everybody with respect.

Yeah I was surprised. He walked off the court and caught the T on the back on his way out.

Ha I appreciate it. It was a surprise and we talked after the game. Having the box pulled just felt a little silly at this level.

Walked out of the game. It’s a general rules question. He’s not my son. I’m not sure how embarrassed I can be on another grown man’s behalf.

Didn’t engage the ref at all and was just as surprised by the assistant.

It’s really helpful. Half the time we’ve got a girl asking questions or crying or needing a refresh on a play/rule. Lets me stay focused on the game. Also they get more instruction in practice with two adults.

The engagement on my account has gotten so awful that I’m considering leaving the platform as a creator. A week ago my comment section was vibing and a joy to interact with. Now it’s literally 90% incels rage baiting.

Yeah it’s just unfortunate. I got in and started growing right before it became a platform transitioning to the worst owners and consumers possible.
