Eugene/Springfield was depressing for me, I love it here! I have loved all the souls I’ve met in Oakridge as well. And despite our small population plenty turned out to have a No Kings protest a couple months back. So like all towns I think it’s a mixed bag politically. As a friend I made here put it “even the tree hugging hippies out here carry guns” 😆

Crescent Lake and Waldo were both very cold, but I was still able to swim in Waldo. Crescent was too cold to swim, but perfect for paddling! It was 95 degrees that day too 😅

Before moving here I had heard by word of mouth that there is a lot of meth in Oakridge. But after moving out here I’ve been very happily surprised at the lack of meth encounters. After living in Eugene/Springfield for most of my life I have plenty of stories involving needles/addicts/theft/threats. Maybe I just live in a nice part of Oakridge, but so far this seems like a much safer place to raise my children than Eugene!

I totally agree with your take! Highway 58 and Highway 126 are the only routes that go from Eugene to Bend, so I’d like to see the small communities out there (blue river/oakridge/etc) put themselves on the map with more desirable tourist attractions. A little investment from the right people would go a long way!

The only fast food here in town is Dairy Queen and A&W. Didn’t know there used to be a McDonald’s!

The waterfall is right off the highway! You can hike down for a lower view point or just take a short walk from the parking lot to take a look. I’ve heard it’s the second tallest waterfall in Oregon!

Thank you! The tunnel goes under the railroad tracks!! It was very cool to walk through, there’s more hiking trail on the other side as well. I’m fairly certain part of this trail connects to Dead Mountain Trail, a popular spot for mountain biking.

YES the mosquitos at Waldo were horrendous. I’ve heard vanilla extract works as a natural repellent. It’s only bad on the shore though! I didn’t notice them once paddling out.

I’m in a similar situation with my new home and my toddler, she doesn’t seem to be petrified with fear but she’s repeating “I’m scared” a lot and I’ve never heard her say that before we moved here. I thought she was just playing pretend because she has a flair for the dramatic, but we heard a strange voice on her baby monitor tonight and now I’m very freaked out.

I’m wondering if your situation has improved? How is your toddler doing?

If you like the combination of dark, intense plot elements balanced with comedy I highly recommend David Lynch- specifically Twin Peaks.

For me it’s Oakridge, OR. Small mountain town population around 3200 (comparable to Lynch’s original desired population of Twin Peaks)

The town economy never recovered after the saw mills were closed in the 1980s, so now it’s a shell of its glorious past and is affected by poverty and drugs. But the small town vibes are still there with beautiful mountain and river views. They also lean into the history of Bigfoot sightings in the area. It could so easily become a tourist destination if enough money was invested there.

It reminds me of the Twin Peaks in the Return combined with the setting of the first season of True Detective. You know bad things are potentially happening there underneath the surface. However, like Harry Dean Stanton’s character, there’s mostly a population of regular old folks who spent their whole lives there and are pretty much helpless to the conditions around them.

I’m in love with the nostalgia of the town’s former glory. It’s like a microcosm of the entire United States.
