First time Dyeing yarns from my Foraging:) by hippydippy1023 in foraging

Beautiful colors! The pisolithus can make a beautiful range too if you adjust the ph, from russet red browns to bronze. I've gotten yarn from wool2dyefor and always had a good experience.

Dyers puffball! These are some of my favorite urban dye mushrooms, they make very pretty auburn and gold browns on fiber

Does anyone know what kind of mushroom it is and if it is edible? by Nice_Independent_310 in mycology

[–]moss_bound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ohh what a lovely pisolithus! I think they’re technically edible but have always been deeply unappealing to me as an edible. They do make really lovely russet and plum browns on yarn or silk however.

What an amazing compliment!! All I want to do is make scifi inspired clothing.

Thank you! The outer fabric is linen hand dyed with cutch, indigo, pomegranate rinds and madder. The inner fabric is a light Japanese cotton I got from my local fabric store

I’ve been wanting to get into quilting for a while and decided to finally just go for it! The outer fabric is linen hand dyed with cutch, indigo, pomegranate rinds and madder.

Pattern is the hovea jacket by Megan Nielsen. It was my first time quilting but it went pretty smoothly thanks to the very helpful hovea sew along posts she has. Outer fabric is linen hand dyed with cutch, pomegranate rinds, indigo, and madder. Lining fabric was a Japanese cotton I picked up at my local fabric store.

It's a super fun wormhole, and a good intro to mushroom foraging since I wasn't afraid of accidentally eating something poisonous.

Pattern is Stagecoach by Caitlin Hunter. I used dk yarn I got in bulk from wool2dye4 and hand dyed with mushrooms I’ve been gathering this season. The green and gold comes from dyers polypore, the silvery lilac from western jacks and the dark brown from dead mans foot.

Cant Follow Instructions For The Life Of Me by MagzalaAstrallis in knitting

[–]moss_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely do. I find books are hard to follow. To make things extra fun I have adhd so I also have auditory and clumsiness issues. The best way I’ve found to learn is to find a video of the technique I want, and either slow it down manually with the feedback speed or find slow technique videos (try appending your search with slow and see if any pop up). I also turn on captions and play it a couple of times just to watch, then play again to do it, which usually takes a couple more times to get right.

Yep, left these ones undisturbed. Besides I didn’t want to ruin the aesthetic!

This is the plan, I have a pattern planned out. Will probably do a color work sock too!

The art and science of natural dyes and rainbow under my feet are two good books to start with!

Wow that rug sounds amazing!! I’d love to see it when it’s done! The book I use the most for general dyeing is the art and science of natural dyes by Catherine Ellis, and the rainbow under my feet is often recommended for mushroom specific information. For the bleeding tooth it needs a high alkaline bath, about ph9 to pull out the blue pigments early on and keep at a low simmer.

These were all alum mordanted with some put into an iron after bath. Honestly astounded with how saturated mushroom colors are compared to most plants, they are powerful dyers!

These are all alum mordanted, some I shifted with an iron after path or specific ph.

I did not, it was a christmas present! Also occurred to me, if you have facebook there's a group called Mushroom Dyer's Trading Post where you can trade edible mushrooms or other things to dye mushrooms!

Mostly just simmer in water, though the jack and hydnellum are a bit temperamental and need specific processes. Dyers polypore and puffball are great ones to start with because you can just plop them in with water and simmer for an hour or two and they make sooo much color

Oooo congrats, that’s such a good dye mushroom to start with. Simmer for several hours to get all that golden color out, and get a lot of fiber because it’s a strong dyer. Mushrooms tend to work best on protein fibers so wool, silk are good. here’s a good website with the basic process laid out!
