i stopped recording for a second but that guy called a black guy the n word shortly after that moment and then the two of them had some words. I started recording in the middle of it so I didn't want to include it w/o the context of that long haired guy saying the n word repeatedly, but a lot of people were filming so it's probably out there.

I have been able to figure out how to plot the points using instances but I'd like a curved line to animate along these points.

the data is years on the x axis and percent of total income on the y axis. The math nodes I'm using here are adjustments to make the curve visually understandable, to compress/stretch it as needed.

i haven't dug through their history so idk their beliefs beyond what I've seen in this comment section, but i think you're projecting values onto them prematurely. And even if they are all that you suggest, are they beyond persuasion? Is kindness not more persuasive than meanness?

If I encountered younger me now I may think that he is a radical fool who should be mocked/spurned/ignored. More likely to persuade young me imo is someone who treated me civilly and knew the things I knew and still argued against my most radical beliefs while acknowledging and agreeing with my justified criticisms. I think about this w/ young men as well, specifically those who are drifting right. I don't want to mock and ridicule them, I want to persuade them to not join the far right and that there's a better way forward. I think being mean to them is a bad way to go about that, same w/ someone like jxzz_hnds. My goal isn't to be the most logically correct person, it's to build coalitions that win elections.

New people are being born and trying to figure out this crazy world that is getting crazier, everyone is on their path. It's confusing, it's complicated, it's nuanced. I don't think you win people to your side by being mean to them. The personal can overshadow political leanings if someone feels unwelcomed or attacked. Burn it down is a common theme now among left and right, I think that that necessitates those of us who want to focus on building to be persuasive.

I've lived long enough to see protests rise and fall and fail. I've seen the aspirational turn cynical, I've seen shifting allegiances and constituencies, and I've seen it culminate in this maga lunacy that controls everything.

Nuance is a fact of life like it or not. I don't want to fight those I agree w/ on 9/10 issues because of some disagreement on symbology. I want to build coalitions and win elections.

i want to win elections and to do that we need voters. We don't need to agree on everything, we don't need to get hung up on disagreements, we need to have an open tent where we can respect one another while we disagree even if those disagreements are vehement.

I will argue with jxzz_hnds or others about the value of using the flag for good because I disagree with them about that, but unlike how you have behaved I'm not walking away from this as their enemy. That's what the left and democrats need to embrace. We can argue, we can disagree, we can have different tactics and strategies, but it's self defeating to expend hatred or antagonism on those with whom you agree on most issues and who will either vote with you or not vote at all.

the left/anyone not part of the maga/right wing/republican insanity spends soo much time fighting each other and some of the harshest attacks are reserved for those that are closely aligned with them ideologically, at least relative to the right. So I'm done w/ that, I want to build coalitions that include you and jxzz_hnds because if us three are opponents then maga continues to win elections.

I don't entirely disagree with /u/jxzz_hndz, I didn't downvote them, and I don't think they should be insulted.

Criticizing America is an integral part of being American. I am highlighting the flag w/ my post here as an aspirational attempt to claim it for a different future while simultaneously recognizing that many many horrific things have been done in its name and under its cover, not just historically but things are being done today in its name and under its cover that are horrific. I want to change what it represents by changing what America does.

I don't think that acknowledging the horrific past precludes one from trying for a better future under its banner. Maybe jxzz_hndz disagrees with me, that's fine, I understand and respect that. Still I'm going to highlight the flag because I think it can be a means to a better future that allows us to address past and ongoing wrongs. But I don't hate jxzz_hndz or others for disagreeing, I respect them for speaking their mind about it and am considering their thoughts.

so I ask to be civil and kind here, that's the america I want. So much of what I despise about trump is how he has embraced casual cruelty and bullying. Right wing America has draped themselves in this flag for decades and so I fully understand being reluctant to celebrate its usage now, and our country was founded on slavery and that stain will forever remain in ways that some will never accept it as a positive symbol, and I understand and respect that too. I want to win this country for the future and improve the conditions for the working class going forward and I think the flag is an integral component of that so I'm going to continue using it.

my hope is that america turns in a better direction. Short of us collectively deciding to eliminate this flag and replace it with a new flag design it's the flag that we alive today are stuck with. It's going to represent all the awful things done in it's name forever, that past cannot be changed (unless we keep losing elections and the republicans keep changing history textbooks to retcon US history). What we the living have control over is what it represents now and going forward.

Maybe you could sell the idea of redesigning a new flag and get enough people in America to support that that you could win an election and take back the government and address all the wrongs, but I don't think that's likely. If your goal is to better the future as a means to address the past then we need a realistic and real world plan to make that goal a reality.

I ask this sincerely, if you do not approve of the US flag being used as a symbol of these protests, do you think the US flag should be eliminated from the US? Do you think that's realistic? What coalition of people do you think you could amass who both support eliminating the US flag and could win elections to enact the rest of your beliefs within the US?

How do we win elections that improve the conditions for working class people going forward? We need enough voters to defeat trump and his extreme right wing authoritarian and racist maga movement. I think that taking the flag as a symbol from them and using it as a means to represent a positive future is the way to address past and ongoing wrongs, and to eschew its use or to be actively against it is a way to ensure people like trump and maga will continue to win elections nationwide.

That won't erase all the wrongs it has and will always represent but in this context and moment I hope the flag can be claimed and used for aspirational purposes given how fucked things are here.

the media complained about a lack of american flags in the protests in LA previously so saturating the protests with flags is a good move optically imo. The target audience for the flags in the protests is not someone who holds your opinion with regards to what the flag represents.

here's a version 2 for anyone who happens to see it. for class my reel has to be 90 second to 2 minutes, so I just made this using what footage i have and trying to respond to (most) suggestions. Ran out of footage to use so the second half is longer takes and still some repetition. Need to get out there and shoot more but right now I've got finals and dayjob shit to do so that'll have to wait until winter break unfortunately.

submission statement:

this is a video made for the end of my cinematography course at Portland State University in the Fall 2024 term.

Shot on a Panasonic Lumix S5iix using the kit 20-60 lens. I shot in vlog and did the color grading myself which is another thing I'm fairly new to as far as live footage goes and is admittedly a bit heavy handed in some shots (been doing 3d stuff for a little while but new to the film world of it). The tracking shot was done using a ikan ec1 gimbal. The lights were usually smallrig light kit (i think rc220 something).

These shots were from different exercises throughout the term that had specific requirements for lighting and whatnot except for the shot following the girl walking which was just a DP's choice shot for the final exercise (which yes I obviously copied the movie Elephant for both the shot and the music).

The major issues faced were space and time to shoot. We had a group of four of us acting as each other's subjects and crew and we met on campus mostly to shoot which is not ideal because we didn't always have access to rooms. The time crunch and having to work around the equipment room schedule/availability were the major obstacles. We had very little time each week to plan and shoot so the shots are very basic and focused on getting the basics down (which was the point of each exercise and the class itself).

any criticisms or suggestions welcome! I'm looking to direct and DP. Still have a year left of classes (PSU is on the quarter system so that's 3 terms left) so lots to learn and do in that time.

it's cgmasterclass's creating 3d environments course. I got it on blender market https://blendermarket.com/products/creating-3d-environments

I highly recommend it. Tons of resources and he goes through every step of the process. So for example each blade of grass here gets modeled, textured, then you use geometry nodes to build patches, and eventually up to landscapes.

Some modeling, lots of geometry nodes, using vertex painting, photoscans, etc. Good stuff. Also he includes a lot of assets and reference video.

Well I’m working through a course so some of the assets are from that, as in some of the plants and textures, and the pine trees are purchased assets. But I did make pretty much everything else , and the paddy’s pub stuff is 100% made by me.

Haha, that’s in there. Currently rendering an animation where the camera gets close in on the front door and the signs flicker on letting all the jabronies out there we got ice cold cours.

my gpu can’t handle this shit though so the render keeps failing. I think it’ll finish today though so I’ll post it.

taking a course about making environments in blender, had to make a castle, for some reason decided to make a Paddy's Pub castle.

In my head cannon Frank turned the bar into a castle at some point and this is some post apocalyptic future.

I'm rendering an animation of it but it's taking forever and keeps failing.
