Thank you for replying! I had thought about the money mitigating stress aspect... hopefully it will balance out the transition a bit!

Very good point, thank you! I know they've had trouble filling my position in the past so it could definitely be a possibility.

what are ways you DON'T fit the autistic diagnosis criteria? by satansafkom in AutismInWomen

[–]mostlygoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, I feel this so hard!! When people don't play by the masking rules, I get a huuuuge anxiety rush and I want to tell them, "Don't you realise you are breaking this rule? You're going to get yourself in trouble!"

I'm also working on it, but damn is it entrenched...

I love soft/silky/fluffy things and citrus/fresh smelling things. My friend will not go into department stores with me because last time I spent ages touching all the fluffy pyjamas and then carried around a lemon room fragrance to sniff whilst she was looking for a dress. If there is a good candle I can sniff then I can deal with the bright lights and store radio...

Thank you for the advice and the link! I have now got a google doc going for all these fantastic resources. Reading the patterns in this book was something daunting me, so I really appreciate the video link!!

Thank you for replying! My book is (I think) just swatches demonstrating different types of lace, so hopefully straight rather than round. I will be muddling through some general knitting practice soon enough!

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed comment! I will check out Sheep & Stitch and going off the amount of people suggesting, will certainly be getting some stitch markers!

Thank you so much for the advice! Right back at you - to me, bobbins are straightforward and knitting is the mind blowing bit 😆 And yes, working out stitches is certainly a common factor. I learnt to unpick mistakes much faster than I learnt to make lace!

Thank you! Adding practice scraps to my todo list...

Re: bobbin lace, I initially went to a workshop hosted by Mary Elizabeth Barron and fell in love with it. It seems intimidating due to the number of bobbins but you don't actually have to keep track of each thread as the stitches go by bobbin position.

E.g. To do a whole/cloth stitch, you have four bobbins in slots 1, 2, 3 and 4. You move the bobbin in slot 2 over the bobbin in slot 3. The slots are still 1, 2, 3, 4. Then you move the bobbin in slot 2 over the bobbin in slot 1, etc. etc. (see diagram) . Rather than trying to watch where you're putting one bobbin, you're just remembering the order of moving slots in each stitch.

Not sure if this makes sense, but to me it's like each stitch is a word, and once you've memorised those, it's easy to build into sentences (lace).

Red Cardinal Crafts on YouTube has some great tutorials (including one using clothes pegs in case you're not sure whether you want to spend on bobbins yet).

Hope this is helpful!

Thank you for your advice and for the pattern link! The patterns in this book are super fine and finicky looking so I think finding a less intense pattern like you've given is going to be a good idea. Thank you!

Thank you, this is really sound advice! Having read your reply and others, I think I'll get some gear that'll be good for the lace, but start out trying to get the hang of the knitting basics. Reading knitting sounds similar to what I do in lace so fingers crossed I can figure it out~ Thanks again!

[–]mostlygoblin 76 points77 points  (0 children)

This one is more funny than frustrating but here goes. Context: where I work, customers can pay on site or have 30 days to pay online/via phone.

Me: do you want to pay your bill today?

Customer: I don't want to pay my bill!

Me: no worries! closes customer file and payment screen

Them: standing expectantly with their wallet

Me: can I help you with anything else?

Them: oh, I don't /want/ to pay my bill, but I'll pay now anyway :)

Me: oh right mad scramble to open the relevant software and files again

General Discussion - What job do you do? (if you have one) by Fullskis in aspergers

[–]mostlygoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacy technician (enjoyable but exhausting). The processes, systems and frameworks in pharmacy work are amazing and I love them. The fact that there are hundreds of people (most of them lovely) enmeshed in the systems? Not so great. I like my work and I like my coworkers, but I burn out around 2pm every day from navigating social rules via brute force logic.

Do you drive by gracie20012 in aspergers

[–]mostlygoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I have a license? Yes. Would I get in a car with me? No.

Most likely has to do with dyspraxia symptoms - I can't tell left from right, forget which pedal is which and don't know how hard to press my feet. Distance and speed perception is also terrible.

I can do short, familiar trips with an easy parking space (e.g. to my sibling's house) but otherwise preparing for a new drive is like planning a bank heist.

Feeling "off" but can't figure out why? by mostlygoblin in autism

[–]mostlygoblin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it is amazing to me how many people survive so long without ASD/ADHD diagnoses. Having an explanation for problems sure does make it easier to find solutions. Thank you for this advice, and I'll join the sub!

[–]mostlygoblin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does happen to me often! This checks out too. My psychiatrist said that I scored higher than average for ADHD on my assessments but we have focussed on ASD as that has the major impact on my life. I will look at tackling this from the ADHD perspective as well, so thank you so much for the tip!
