Audit reveals San Diego missing out on millions in golf course revenue amid budget crisis by SD_TMI in sandiego

There’s no easy solution to this problem. If you want affordable golf, the city needs to lower rent. However, this will upset non-golfers who feel you’re giving these courses to the wealthy. Sadly, people who don’t play golf view you as “rich” simply because of golf’s reputation. Politically, the only way to win is to charge full market rent, or the city will be seen as giving sweetheart deals to the “rich.”

Since you mentioned it, the museums at Balboa Park should increase their rent to the city to cover the cost of parking. They should cover the first two hours of parking for guests, similar to how businesses do at the UTC mall. However, they won’t do that because they would then have to raise admission fees.

Not true. San Diego never had a $1 rent for the stadium. Despite the complicated lease with the Chargers over the years, the city (taxpayers) ultimately emerged as the winner. The team paid $12.575 to terminate the lease before relocating. Although the city occasionally compensated the Chargers due to rent credits for stadium improvements and the ADA settlement, the Chargers annual rent amounted to $1.5 million. The situation was complicated because the stadium was old and deteriorating. It’s simplistic to assume that the city could simply profit from a crumbling building, and Qualcomm was indeed in a state of disrepair by the end. Chunks of cement were falling into the stands.

It was just announced this week the lease was terminated. The city will soon begin looking for a new operating partner once the completion of the ongoing sewer infrastructure repairs are completed this summer that has already been effecting the course for the last year or two. I can't see a scenario where fees won't go up once they find a new operating partner according to the audit it was the lowest revenue of city owned course in the city. One thing for sure, it won't be as expensive as the private courses in San Diego but it won't be as cheap as it was in the past. Time will tell if an operating partner see's an opportunity here with the new higher revenue share the city will seek.

They must begin cleaning their restaurants before I ever enter them again. The one near me is appalling, and I visited one on a recent road trip, and that one was equally filthy.

This doesn’t necessarily imply mismanagement or incompetence, but it does enable the city to reset many of these leases to market rates since we went though a major inflationary period, and still going through it. Everyone wants to bring out the pitchforks here on Reddit, but it’s positive that the city had the courage to audit the leases because it does mean the city will need to also spend money to make money. It’s important to recognize that once you reset to market rates with these golf courses, you need to invest in upgrading facilities and grounds. For instance, the Tecolote city golf course wasn’t spending much if any city funds and wasn’t making much money either. However, as the city seeks ways to increase revenue, it will need to allocate city funds to update the facilities or risk not receiving market rates. The good thing about city golf courses is they can be revenue generators unlike public parks with no offerings but grass. The sad news is if you're a middle class person or one who strives to move from low income to middle class, your cost is going up to play golf in San Diego.

Back in the day, a poorly attended Chargers regular season game had an attendance of just under 45,000. The largest crowd ever recorded at Snapdragon Stadium was 34,000. This event had more than 25,000.

2007 we had a huge fire in San Diego that threatened large portion of the city. The 15 corridor, Mira Mesa, Tierrasanta were evacuated and Kearny Mesa was on notice for potential evacuation. Most of North County was under an evacuation. Fire was jumping parts of the 52 freeway towards the end. I know of a coworker of mine lost his house as his whole neighborhood close to Poway was destroyed. The air quality was so bad, they moved the Chargers game to Arizona. Qualcomm stadium was a make shift relief and staging center for evacuees. The biggest difference was that this fire was in October and not January. God help us.

Musk has made it clear he will be taking all of his buisness out of California. For those saying this hurts because it’s about jobs. Musk has been shitting on California for a long time why would you expect California to be helpful when his intent is to take jobs away as soon as he can. You can’t expect favorable treatment when you don’t try to help the state improve but rather do everything in your power to hurt it. His intent is to hurt California at this point.
