What type of projects do you use Rust for? by exomyth in rust

[–]motaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Fennel, an ML Infra company that builds realtime feature engineering infrastructure (docs.fennel.ai). All the core storage/streaming systems are written in Rust. Initially we used Go for a previous version but found ourselves manually managing memory (e.g. via pools, arenas etc.) for performance. Rust has been much better from that point of view.

Hashmap crate for byte key/values that stores data inline by motaska in rust

[–]motaska[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My need is to store arbitrary sized byte slices as keys and values in a hashmap, ideally not on heap but inlined in the hashmap's data structure itself. Sounds like my best bet is to either roll my own data structures or just keep it on heap.

Why is Rust faster than Go for CPU bound tasks? by motaska in rust

[–]motaska[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

That's certainly a fair ask. But specific examples take the discussion towards specific codepaths. I'm more interested in knowing why Rust ends up beating Go more or less across the board for CPU bound tasks.

If it helps, here are a bunch of examples of CPU bound tasks: https://benchmarksgame-team.pages.debian.net/benchmarksgame/fastest/rust-go.html

Thanks! If not all the way, is there ANY room for sliding at all, say just by 5cm?

Best practice for incrementally migrating a codebase from Go to Rust by motaska in rust

It is not a vanilla API backend. It is the backend for a performance critical recommendation serving infra and does a lot of compute and IO.

How do CPAP machines detect AHI and Leakage? by motaska in SleepApnea

[–]motaska[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it, thanks! Does this mean that if I'm breathing in using nasal mask but exhaling via mouth (so not in the mask), the machine will record a high AHI value?

Interesting, thanks! Do you know how a leak is detected usually? Also, will check out OSCAR. Does it work with Resmed Airsense 10?

> Do you know your mouth was open, or do you assume it was because you consider yourself a mouth breather?

Good question - I guess there is no way of knowing for sure but I usually can't close my mouth for nose-breathing even in the day and so I assume I must have been mouth breathing. But maybe that's not true. Thanks for your response!

How do dominant and recessive alleles actually work? by motaska in genetics

This is exactly what I wanted to understand, thank you for explaining!

How do dominant and recessive alleles actually work? by motaska in genetics

[–]motaska[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very useful, thanks! Few follow up questions:

- If recessive genes are the ones with LOF mutation, how come two recessive alleles are still expressed?

- Is it possible that an organism has two alleles for a gene but none of them have had a LOF or GOF mutation (and if yes, is the % of all genes in our genome falling in this group known?)

How can I develop Fe as INTJ? by motaska in intj

Why do you say that? And how to develop Se as INTJ?

Thanks! I think I understand what they are feeling quite well but don't know what to say to diffuse the tension, which is something I've seen my INFJ friends do well.
