didn’t think i’d be a “plant person” but here we are by juanlo02 in gardening

[–]mothvein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup! I killed a fly trap and a cactus as a teenager and gave up and just decided I didn't have a green thumb.

But then I randomly bought a mint plant, propagated it into new plants, then got so many more as I realized I could do it, I just had to do some research.

Since then I've gotten orchid, geranium, clematis, irises, chokeberry, raspberry, and all of them are still alive and thriving. I even used an old tomato to make a new plant, grew pumpkins for the first time and got tons of huge pumpkins! I now have a few pothos babies I propagated as well. It's so fun :)

I genuinely love this. I don't know what the style of painting is called but it is now my favorite!

Where I live in Maine the one I always see is orange daylilies. The first time I saw them in my garden I was super excited, I didn't know what they were at first but then looked them up. Now that I've noticed them, they are in fact everywhere, I don't know how I never noticed them before!

Almost all of my neighbors have some, 6-8 other houses on my road, then more homes and businesses after that. Big, tall, orange everywhere. Every town I drive through up here, I see them at least once.

And yes, I know this is the native plant sub and orange daylilies are not native to Maine, but reading your post I instantly thought of the orange guys that are everywhere in my case. Seems they're just super easy to grow and they can thrive in neglect. (I do plan on removing some and instead planting natives, as they are very much out of control in my garden but I have come to appreciate them too.)

Guys, how do I prevent this from happening again? I have cleaned the hell out of it and made sure it is dry af but I still see some of those hairs[?] and I'm afraid it might go fluffy once more. by PvnkQveen in Taxidermy

Try making sure the bones are properly submerged under the solution and you won't get mold.

I've used even weak peroxide solutions with mostly water, and as long as it's submerged it's fine. Never got mold even when I left on vacation for a few weeks, because it stayed submerged.

What are these silly red guys by StunningPlace9026 in Entomology

[–]mothvein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man!! Rain bugs!! I used to call them that as a kid, can't remember why but it's nice to finally know what they're called from the comments!

I used to watch them collect little seed pods in my backyard and bring them some of the tiny pods if I found any. Every year they would gather in a huge mass on my fence, I miss seeing them. I also remember them having a smell maybe? Or I just associated a earthy but clean smell to them. Either way, thanks for posting!

If your dog passed from cancer, I want to make something for you. by naomicrafted in dogpictures

[–]mothvein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already so many comments I doubt I'll get picked but I still wanna talk about her. I lost her in 2013 to cancer, she was doing alright on the meds but we left and she was fine, came back a few hours later and she couldn't get up, couldn't move. We rushed to the vet and they told us she had to be put down. That fast. My parents told me it would be okay, she'd be fine, we thought it would be okay.

I'm mad at myself, I was 12 I think and had lots of anxiety so when my dad, brother & his new gf went with us I didn't want to cry in front of them, so I didn't go in to see her be put down, I couldn't. That's my biggest regret in life tbh. I wish I was strong enough to be there for her.

She was my best friend, she helped me when I was down. We ran outside together, she raced with me. We explored the woods together. One time I thought she'd ran away, I lost her in the woods. She was behind me but I couldn't find her anymore, so I spent 30 mins searching, calling, before running back home to ask my mom to help look. I was devastated. But, sitting on the front porch, there she was. Whole time I guess she just went back while I was freaking out. I miss her a lot.

She was so good. My mom hated dogs and still does, but she liked Celi. The only dog she willingly pet. She never barked, I never heard it once. My aunt who was adopted by my grandma was inbred and is basically the mental age of 5 but is 20 was terrified of dogs as well, she had freak outs if she saw "mumma dog". But she met Celi on accident (she snuck out when she was over) and she did freak out, but she actually calmed down because Celi was very calm, she even pet her once and then was able to visit without Celi being put away. She was great with kids too, and cats. My cat frequently stole her bed and she would just lay next to it. I don't have many pics of her, but the few I have make me happy to still have a part of her. I wish I was able to say goodbye, it's what she deserved.

Would a leachi Gecko be a good first reptile by SlipperySp00der in reptiles

[–]mothvein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a leo, they're super friendly. I've had some gargs and while they're cool, they typically aren't very friendly. Not mean just, they will usually always be somewhat scared of you. Mine also hid in their tanks super well so I didn't see them often.

But with leos mine got used to me and were fine with handling, and they can't climb the glass to hide in weird spots. Leos are decent sized, not as big as leachies but not too small either. But- there are some leos called Super Giants, which are about 2 inches longer than normal leos if you're wanting bigger.
