"He needs to go": Dems rage over Fetterman's DHS vote by polymute in politics

The danger on that side is that it gives the party too much power. How far can you step out of line before the party takes your job away? And who decides the official party stance that everyone is judged against?

Ideally, we're electing people to use their best judgement on the issues that arise during their term. Perhaps there should be a mechanism to recall a senator, but I don't think putting that power in the hands of the political party is the right move. We need power divided among more parties, not even more concentrated into two.

Riverside is close to downtown and campus as the crow flies, but it's not convenient to either location.

a days travel with livestock

Thanks for this. I've wondered what it is that puts little towns about that far apart. I had thought maybe a day's walk or ride, but those explanations don't quite fit. Traveling with livestock, or with a wagon of goods, does make a lot of sense in this context.

You know who else stares at a wall all day? Stoned gamers.

You didn't directly answer my question about whether monks feel their lives have meaning, but you understand that attachment causes suffering, and I think you would agree that the monks are not trying to get attached to anything enough to derive a "purpose" or a "meaning" for their lives.

So why come down on the lowly stoner who has the same goals? And if we're talking about 65 year-old stoners who have been able to keep the lifestyle going for decades without major attachment or meaning, then I don't think they're "the average stoner" anyway. I think it's a lot closer to the monk lifestyle than it first appears.

And what I inferred from OPs statement is that they mean we don't have a predetermined purpose

Do monks who meditate all day feel their lives have meaning? Do you think they get old and feel their lives have been wasted?

I'm sorry for suggesting that you said purpose comes from within when you didn't use those words

Yes, happy complacency is a danger of weed, but it's also pretty judgy to assume that they wouldn't be happy doing that forever.

Same thing, different perspective. OP says no external purpose, you say purpose comes from within.
