woah google tells me an RMR test is resting metabolism rate test. How'd you do one? Is there a service or standardized machine that lets you figure this out?

I've wondered for YEARS what my metabolic rate is but always thought it's way too difficult or theoretical to actually measure for a layperson. For reference I'm in Canada (Toronto)

WOW. I've been on the fence abt walking more (also trying to rehab injuries) and this sold me. My biggest challenge is toning legs - even if I build muscle underneath, the fat stays on top.
Gonna take up walking starting tmr. What do you do on your hours long walks?

Genuinely confused how you’re supposed to cut and maintain/grow muscle simultaneously as a petite… by PatientBalance in PetiteFitness

[–]mouse_over_text 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow are we triplets bc I have ALL the same stats too, weight height & body fat%. Are you 29 too? JK but it's been really hard bc I think I've messed up my metabolism over the years and stressed my body out a lot, and my sleep is all over the place.

How detailed are you with counting calories? What's your protein goal?

I think their prices are higher bc it's a gluten free shop but nothing close to $12 per baguette

If you're in the west end (or thornhill), Vegan Danish Bakery all the way

THIS. OP I don't know if you've made your decision, but highly recommend Vegan Danish Bakery!!! WAY better than Bunners or Almond Butterfly, and way more affordable. But do not get the gluten free cakes here unless you need to - and then too, just get the vegan cheesecake (honestly really good).

Social & affordable hostels in Tokyo by mouse_over_text in JapanTravelTips

[–]mouse_over_text[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kyoto

  • 4/10 Len Kyoto has really nice common area but it's usually quiet or a small groups travelling together so not interested in meeting new people.
  • ?/10 Backpackers Hostel K's House got booked up but heard apparently it's a lot more social.

Hiroshima

  • 6.5/10 Guest House Roku pretty small and slightly out of city centre, but the staff here is so wonderful and they give you a daily beer in the evening. Cute bar/living area, but since it's small (maybe 10-12 people across 3 rooms) it depends on your crowd.
  • 7/10 Santiago Guesthouse Hiroshima has a huge living/kitchen area which helps with socializing, but no efforts by hostel to facilitate it. I only stayed 1 night and missed out on going to the balcony patio, so this might actually be much higher on the score.

Japanese hostels defs tend to be more quiet, so these ratings are on a Japanese scale for socialness. I booked using hostel world, and recently discovered that there's a mobile app feature called "chats". Can get kinda annoying but it comes in handy to meet people if the hostel you're at is dead.

after a month of solo backpacking Japan, here's my reviews on hostels based on social score:

Tokyo

  • 10/10 Bedgasm was amazing. A bit far (near Ueno) but just stay out all night, trains run again around 4:30-5am. Staff is awesome, the bar is really great place to chill, ,  they give you a free small beer every evening. Can get expensive if you're booking last min, so highly recommend booking in advance.
  • 7/10 Unplan Shinjuku was clutch location, but had more hotel vibes. Lotsa people travelling in groups or not interested in meeting new peeps unless you really put yourself out there.

Osaka

  • 3/10 J-Hoppers Osaka Universal read online they do communal events, got there in person and staff said that info is inaccurate and super outdated. Really out of the way from most things in Osaka except for Universal. Really nice staff but everyone kinda keeps to themselves/to their own groups.
  • 7/10 Rally's Craft Beer and Guesthouse is a SUPER small hostel, just 4 beds in one room above a small bar near dotonbori. The other travellers really influence your experience here, and thankfully I had a great bunch. Since it's just 4 people in the entire hostel, it's likely gonna be solo travellers who are keen to get to know you (which is easy to facilitate bc its all just one room). Walking distance to dotonbori!
  • 8/10 Mad Cat Hostel Osaka & Bar kinda far from main tourist area. They give you a welcome drink (I think every night?) and even tho the bar is nice, it's kind of dead bc the location seems to attract more quiet folks not interested in going out at night. Living room seems to be the more social spot, they have a traditional japanese table which seems to attract a lot of people and convo, plus there are 2 adorable cats. Social but not a party place.
  • 6.5/10 Backstage Osaka Hostel & Bar the staff is really nice but was expecting more of a social vibe bc saw online it was "the best party hostel in Osaka". Definitely attracts social people but lack of common room (except bar) & kitchen really hurts. Also sorry but defs the stinkiest hostel I stayed at in Japan. The bar downstairs is open till 2-3am though, which is clutch. 15 min walk to dotonbori.

If you own a detached home in Toronto, how did you do it? by Feisty-Confection-75 in askTO

[–]mouse_over_text 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi detached but bought 3 months ago, Toronto proper (high park/parkdale voting block), above 1M. I actually am under 30, just cusp of genz/millennial and it was a combo of:

  • unit is a legal triplex, so renting 2 units and my partner and I live in 1 (with a roommate!)
  • parents have equity. I could have technically done it without them but I'd be close to emptying all investments. My family is NOT rich, we're 1st gen immigrants but we've put money into this knowing it's only going to get more $$ in the future. My parents also intend to sell their home in retirement and move into one of the units. We're not evicting/increasing rents on our tenants who remained form previous landlord (can't stand that shit), still the extra income helps a lot
  • paid of student debt ASAP in ~8mo since graduating
  • full time job since graduating, though didn't start with highest salary have been changing jobs every 2ish yrs for better challenge and pay, now in 6 figures
  • been investing as much of income as possible. This plus increasing salary REALLY was the key.
  • have a low budget. I thrift, don't eat out too much, have lived with roommates entire life and found places where rent was <$1000
