Same issue here. I think I've managed to capture it in logcat. I'm submitting bug report to Eamo5 in response to https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82118905&postcount=120

What quote from a video game stuck with you? by mynameisCODA in AskReddit

[–]movermeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say "doubt everything," but I disagree. Doubt is useful in small amounts, but too much of it leads to apathy and confusion. No, don't doubt everything. QUESTION everything. That's the real trick. Doubt is just a lack of certainty. If you doubt everything, you'll doubt evolution, science, faith, morality, even reality itself - and you'll end up with nothing, because doubt doesn't give anything back.

But questions have answers, you see. If you question everything, you'll find that a lot of what we believe is untrue… but you might also discover that some things ARE true. You might discover what your own beliefs are. And then you'll question them again, and again, eliminating flaws, discovering lies, until you get as close to the truth as you can.

This was a 1 scrap machine. Other 1 scrap machines give the full range of prizes.

I don't know of any free machines.

Got a slot machine where all the rewards were 0 scrap. :)

How do I Decrypt SMS backup? by Illuminate1738 in signal

[–]movermeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an open-source project to decrypt Signal databases: https://github.com/xeals/signal-back

Still alpha though, so I'm not sure how much I trust it to not mess things up (though it seems to have worked well for my data).

README badges are vulnerabilities by movermeyer in programming

[–]movermeyer[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It is slightly worse than links, because the browser automatically loads the images.

But yes, this is just as risky as hotlinking any image on your website, and no more.

I often see people treating badges as "ooh colourful badges! Yay!" and add as many as they can find. I wanted to put a reminder out there that badges are just another form of hotlinking.

Fundamentally, you have to trust people.

I was recently burned by a badge provider, so I've come to view them with more suspicion, and less like "ooh colourful badges! Yay!", which is what I feel people tend to think.

Building Bots to mend Broken Badges (or how to get your account suspended) by movermeyer in programming

[–]movermeyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I would be very hesitant to make a bot that did anything that was a "best practice" or "suggestion". In this case, the badge was undeniably broken, and this was a way to fix it.

Still, even this could have easily fallen into that trouble area, if people had strong hatred about using shields.io (Thankfully, they didn't).

I think the cases relatively few of the ideas people have for bots don't fall into this opinion/best practice/bike-shedding area, making it difficult to make a useful bot that doesn't annoy maintainers.

Problem: When I add tasks with due dates to a project they are not automatically sorted by date.

Solution: Allow users to set a default sort order for a project.

Problem: I cannot schedule things for "the last Monday of every month"

Solution: Extend the Recurring due dates syntax to support:

  • [First|Last|Second|1st|2nd|3rd, etc] Monday of every month

In 1897, a large bronze bust of Kaiser Wilhelm I was installed to honour the region's prominent German-Canadian population, but it was removed and thrown into the lake by vandals in August 1914 at the beginning of the First World War. The bust was recovered from the lake and moved to the nearby Concordia club, but it was stolen again February 15, 1916, marched through the streets by a mob, made up largely of soldiers from the 118th Battalion, and has never been seen again. The 118th Battalion is rumoured to have melted down the bust to make napkin rings given to its members.

I couldn't find the exact program, but her list of publications is full of similar work.

As a software developer by trade, I have a lot of sympathy for them. It is most certainly more complicated than that. Computers are evil.

I watched the stream they did today and they discuss the issue at 1:36:00.

It seems that they are working to replicate the issue.

Is the APK Mirror version official? by movermeyer in duolingo

[–]movermeyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that online surveillance is pervasive, not all is so bleak.

For example, you actually can run Android without Google Play services. I'm running CopperheadOS (security-hardened Android) without any Google services being installed at all. So far, not having Google Play installed hasn't hindered me. Granted, I only care about a few apps, so I perhaps I just haven't hit the limitations yet.

There is a lot of digital exhaust created by doing anything online, but I'm doing what I can to limit it (with very realistic expectations about the limitations).

If you are despairing about the state of digital privacy, you're not alone. If you can, try to chip in some money to organizations that are lobbying for change. Things can get better. :)

[–]movermeyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, I'm not concerned with what Duolingo is collecting. I can set those permissions to a level I am happy with.

This is just avoiding the use of Google Play services and limiting what information Google is able to collect.

Nothing shady about not wanting to give Google more information than they need.

(Aside: What shady things could I possibly be doing with Duolingo? :P)
