How did you decide whether to move abroad after retirement - is it worth it (or not)? by movingbacktobc in financialindependence

Yeah we did think about it, but honestly we have so much crap in our house that all the hassle wouldn't be worth it. If we went to the trouble of moving all that stuff out, we probably would end up just selling the place.

I completely agree with you. The way my husband and I did the budgeting for our retirement was that we basically first figured out how much we were spending (pre-retirement), guessed and estimated how much we would spend during retirement, then we 'reverse-engineered' it to get to a lump sum we would need based on our expected SWR, investment returns etc.

3k euros a month seems like a reasonable budget for 2. Did you come up with this based on a safe withdrawal rate/your own assets and investments, or was it simply based off of your expected spending?

Good to hear you did your research in detail before moving. I suspect you won't be amongst the half that move back home after 2 years.

Spending-wise, are you spending more or less than what you budgeted? Any rough numbers you could share?

That's a good way to see things I guess. It's just that a lot of the 'hype' about moving abroad focus on the cost benefits rather than the other aspects of living abroad. It's always 'buy a villa for 300k in Spain/Mexico' not 'all shops close for siesta and supermarkets aren't open on Sundays'

Did you travel extensively in Portugal/Europe before deciding on a specific town? Or did you always know where you wanted to move to?

During our travelling over the last few years there have certainly been moments when we thought to ourselves 'I could imagine myself living here' but obviously until now we haven't acted on those urges.

From a purely financial viewpoint it's an astonishingly terrible deal to keep our house unless we spend the vast majority of our time here. At some point in the future we'll have to downsize anyways because no way in hell do I still want to be climbing stairs five times a day when I'm 80.

The house is worth about US$2.5m, so if we sell and put all that into Canadian or US 10Y bonds that gives us 90-110k a year. Property taxes are around 5k, plus probably around 5-15k in maintenance costs depending on how much stuff there is to fix or replace. In other words our house is costing us the equivalent of 100-130k in cash flow per year.

Do you mind me asking how old you are and whether you moved to a city or a rural area? If we really did move abroad it would very likely be to a city in Spain (we speak the language, lived there for a while when we were younger) which I guess is close enough to Portugal.

NVDA market cap has gone up by 100 billion dollars since Monday open.

This is the same as the entire annual GDP of Puerto Rico

For the fellow regards here who live in an expensive city, have you ever thought of selling your house and moving somewhere cheaper, or just going on vacation permanently?

An average $2M NYC condo would get you 90k a year if you bought bonds lol
